The Senior Electrical Engineer will be responsible for troubleshooting complex electrical and mechanical systems, managing capital and O&M projects, and developing long-range maintenance and improvement plans. Work Environment
This position is based at a power generation facility (Plant McIntosh) and includes a combination of office and field work. The environment requires hands-on engagement with plant systems and equipment in operational settings.
- Exposure to industrial plant conditions, including heat, cold, noise, and mechanical systems
- Fieldwork involving walking, climbing, bending, and working around large equipment
- Collaboration with operations, maintenance, engineering, and vendor teams
- On-call responsibilities and support for plant reliability as needed
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Support & Technical Leadership
- Provide day-to-day technical engineering support for plant electrical and mechanical systems
- Serve as a troubleshooting resource for complex system issues and equipment failures
- Evaluate plant systems and recommend design, performance, and reliability improvements
- Provide engineering guidance to operations and maintenance teams
Capital & O&M Project Management
- Manage capital and operations & maintenance (O&M) projects from planning through execution
- Develop project scopes, budgets, schedules, and justification for approval
- Ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget
- Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and internal engineering teams
Long-Term Planning & Budgeting
- Develop 5- and 10-year capital improvement plans for plant systems and infrastructure
- Prepare and support budget development, forecasting, and financial justification
- Provide monthly accruals, variance analysis, and reporting to finance stakeholders
System Analysis & Reliability Engineering
- Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for equipment failures and system issues
- Perform technical evaluations of plant systems including performance and reliability assessments
- Recommend upgrades, modifications, and long-term engineering solutions
Equipment Oversight & Evaluation
- Conduct ongoing inspections and evaluations of plant equipment and systems
- Monitor performance of key assets including pumps, motors, turbines, boilers, switchgear, and control systems
- Identify opportunities for optimization and lifecycle extension
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Southern Company Services, OEMs, and external engineering partners
- Coordinate with vendors and contractors to ensure project alignment and technical compliance
- Communicate engineering needs and recommendations to plant and corporate leadership
Documentation & Reporting
- Develop technical reports, work orders, and project documentation
- Maintain accurate records of engineering decisions, analyses, and recommendations
- Provide clear communication on project status, risks, and performance metrics
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET-accredited program required)
- 10 years of engineering experience in power generation, industrial, or utility environments
- Strong background in electrical systems within a power plant or heavy industrial setting
- Demonstrated experience in project management and technical leadership
Required Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of electrical engineering principles and power generation systems
- Proven ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) across technical and non-technical audiences
- Ability to work independently and make sound engineering decisions
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and external vendors

- Experience with industrial electrical systems including switchgear, transformers, breakers, and controls
