JOB SUMMARY:

The Residence Director is a seasonal position that serves as a key leadership member of Beacon College‑offered Summer Programs, including Summer for Success and College Edge. The Residence Director provides oversight and support for residential life operations, student supervision, and engagement activities, ensuring a safe, structured, and supportive living environment for students. This role plays a vital part in the day‑to‑day operation of the residential program, supports student development and intervention efforts, and assists with the supervision of residence life staff. The Residence Director reports directly to the Residence Life Coordinator and works under the indirect supervision of the Associate Director of Summer Programs and other designated program administrators.

DUTIES AND TASKS:

  • Reside in assigned on‑campus housing and provide residential coverage for Summer Programs, including weekdays, evenings, and weekends, to ensure student safety and program continuity;
  • Participate in an on‑call rotation, including overnight and weekend responsibilities, responding appropriately to student needs, incidents, or emergencies in accordance with established protocols;
  • Oversee and support evening and weekend on‑ and off‑campus student activities and excursions, including participation in at least one off‑campus trip each weekend, with additional coverage as program needs require;
  • Assist in the supervision and support of Residence Life Assistant staff, providing guidance, feedback, and escalation of concerns to the Residence Life Coordinator as appropriate;
  • Observe, evaluate, and document student behavior, engagement, and progress within the residential environment, and assist with the implementation of intervention strategies as directed;
  • Host and facilitate residential programming, engagement opportunities, and community‑building activities that support student development and program goals;
  • Attend and actively participate in all required staff meetings, including pre‑program training sessions and ongoing staff development meetings;
  • Support the planning and facilitation of program opening day activities and other program events as assigned;
  • Communicate student‑related concerns, incidents, or observations to the Residence Life Coordinator and other appropriate program personnel in a timely and professional manner;
  • Collect, document, and maintain accurate student data on a daily basis or as directed to support intervention planning and end‑of‑program evaluation efforts;
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of, and comply with, all program policies, expectations, and procedures, modeling professional conduct throughout the duration of the program; and
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by program leadership to support the overall success and integrity of Beacon College Summer Programs.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of residential life operations, student supervision practices, and community living standards.
  • Foundational knowledge of learning differences, neurodiversity, and inclusive practices supporting diverse student needs.
  • Knowledge of student development principles, including social, emotional, and behavioral development.
  • Knowledge of confidentiality, privacy, and ethical standards when working with student information.
  • Knowledge of college transition skills and independent living competencies.


Skills:

  • Strong observation and documentation skills, with attention to detail when collecting and recording student data and program information.
  • Problem‑solving skills with the ability to assess student needs, implement appropriate responses, and escalate concerns when necessary.
  • Leadership and collaboration skills, including the ability to support and guide residence life staff.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to collaborate effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff in person, on the phone, and over e-mail.
  • Exceptional time and organizational skills with a systematic approach to managing tasks and priorities.


Abilities:

  • Ability to provide consistent and appropriate supervision in residential and program settings to ensure student safety and well‑being.
  • Ability to maintain a professional and patient approach when working with students, parents, and other Beacon College community members.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Availability and willingness to participate in evening and weekend on-call duties and respond to emergencies. Hours are subject to different factors including, but not limited to, enrollment, occupancy, emergencies, and other departmental needs.
  • Strong ability to remain composed and maintain a clear focus during high-stress situations.
