About the Role
As a Grain Originator, you’ll play a key role in sourcing grain from local producers and commercial partners while building trusted relationships that support our cooperative’s growth. You’ll communicate market trends, develop buying strategies, and coordinate with internal teams to ensure efficient, profitable grain origination and logistics.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working directly with farmers, analyzing markets, and driving results through relationship-building and smart merchandising.
What You’ll Do

Develop and maintain strong relationships with local producers and commercial elevators.

Contact producers regularly to communicate bids, market trends, and opportunities.

Negotiate grain purchases that align with company objectives and market conditions.

Track producer activity and maintain accurate records of available bushels and contract details.

Enter and manage contracts (Purchase, Sales, HTA, Hedges) within the AgVantage Grain System.

Ensure all purchase and sales confirmations are properly signed and recorded.

Coordinate grain logistics, deliveries, and settlements in collaboration with operations and accounting teams.

Understand truck, rail, and barge freight spreads and their effect on market basis values.

Record and assist with daily hedging activity to ensure accurate position management.

Communicate DPR (Daily Position Report) information to the merchandising manager.

Participate in regular meetings and conference calls to share market updates and operational insights.

Provide exceptional customer service and project a positive, professional image of the cooperative at all times.
What You’ll Bring

Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Economics, or related field — or equivalent combination of education and experience (6 years preferred).

Strong understanding of grain marketing, contracting, logistics, and commodity trading principles.

Excellent negotiation and relationship management skills.

High level of integrity and professionalism.

Strong communication skills — both verbal and written.

Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and grain accounting systems (AgVantage preferred).
Working Conditions

Mix of office and field work; must be comfortable in both environments.

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in varying indoor/outdoor weather conditions.

Occasional travel within local territory to visit producers and partners.
