Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Lead Mechanic to support wastewater treatment plant operations in Westerly, Rhode Island. This role is responsible for maintaining plant equipment, facilities, and collection systems while leading maintenance activities, supervising personnel, and ensuring operational reliability and regulatory compliance.
The ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills, leadership experience, and a background in industrial or wastewater facility maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform preventive, predictive, corrective, and emergency maintenance on plant equipment and facilities.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain pumps, valves, motors, engines, and related mechanical systems.
- Diagnose equipment issues and implement effective corrective actions.
- Coordinate maintenance activities with plant operations and project teams.
- Schedule and oversee outside contractors when necessary.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, and preventive maintenance schedules within the CMMS.
- Conduct routine plant inspections to evaluate equipment performance, cleanliness, and maintenance needs.
- Supervise, train, and evaluate maintenance personnel.
- Assist in emergency response situations and support plant operations during critical events.
- Prepare reports and ensure compliance with operational, safety, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in an on-call rotation once comfortable with facility operations and provide support for occasional weekend or holiday overtime as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of industrial, municipal, or wastewater maintenance experience.
- Strong knowledge of:
- 480V three-phase electrical systems
- Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
- Control circuits
- Mechanical systems including pumps, valves, motors, and rotating equipment
- Previous supervisory or team leadership experience.
- Experience with planning, scheduling, inventory management, and maintenance coordination.
- Experience managing budgets, tracking costs, and optimizing labor and materials.
- Working knowledge of CMMS systems for work order and preventive maintenance management.
- Ability to weld and perform basic fabrication work.
- Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes and safe work practices.
- Experience operating or troubleshooting PLC and SCADA systems.
- Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to build effective working relationships with clients, coworkers, contractors, and the public.
- Ability to travel throughout facilities and job sites to develop work plans and support maintenance activities.
