EMS TRAINING LIEUTENANT

Augusta County is a combination fire-rescue system responding from 17 stations protecting the second-largest county in Virginia. We have an authorized level of 156 full-time employees, plus part-time personnel. Career personnel staff 13 of the 17 stations. Annually, Augusta County responds to over 10,000 EMS incidents and transports over 7,400 patients. ACFR utilizes a tiered pre-hospital EMS system of EMTs, Advanced EMTs, and Paramedics. Our high-performance model is developing a team to provide advanced care including mechanical ventilation, airway management with RSI/DSI, and whole blood administration. This position will add to the current Training Division, comprised of 7 full-time staff, including the Division Chief of Training and six Training Lieutenants. We are also supported by adjunct faculty for all education programs.

The EMS Training Lieutenant will be part of a team responsible for:

Providing oversight and delivery of accredited initial-certification EMS Education Programs, including but not limited to:

• development, delivery, and documentation of course content including curricula, lesson plans, schedules, and practical scenarios
• coordination of clinical and field internships for certification programs
• management and mentorship of inter- and intra-department field preceptor cadre
• supervision and mentorship of adjunct faculty instructors

In cooperation with the EMS Physician and EMS Administration, develop, coordinate, and deliver advanced life support and basic life support EMS training and continuing education to all personnel

Maintains and directs care of training facility and equipment, ensuring care and cleanliness that meets manufacturer’s standards/recommendations for equipment maintenance

Provides oversight, management, and delivery of annual ALS and BLS skills training for career and volunteer staff

Assists with fiscal responsibilities, including the preparation of the annual budget and the writing/submission of grant proposals

Subject to call back or respond to major incidents; fill various positions within the Incident Command System as assigned or required

The Process:

• August 7, 2026 at 1700: Application deadline
• August 17-21, 2026: Interviews held in-person at the Augusta County Government Center
• August 25, 2026: Anticipated offer letters sent to selected applicants
• September 2026: New hire start date

Education and Experience:
Demonstrated experience in the delivery of pre-hospital emergency care at the Advanced EMT level, preferably the Paramedic level. Experience developing and implementing curricula based on EMS education standards. Experience with accreditation, national registry, and the requirements for state certification is preferred. Demonstrated commitment to meeting students’ learning needs and empowering students in their learning endeavors.

Minimum Qualification:

• High school diploma or equivalent

• VA Advanced EMT in good standing with VDH, OEMS

• VDH OEMS Education Coordinator (must obtain within 24 months of hiring)

• Emergency Vehicle Operator, Class 2

• Five years of experience as an EMS provider in 911 transport system

Preferred Qualifications or Ability to Obtain:

• Associate’s degree or higher in EMS sciences or related studies

• Nationally Registered Paramedic• VDH OEMS Education Coordinator

• AHA CPR Instructor• Experience in prehospital or inter-facility critical care

• Emergency Vehicle Operator, Class 3

• Experience with online instruction via a course management system
