Fire Rescue Lieutenant
Augusta County Fire-Rescue is seeking an individual who is highly motivated, professional, team-oriented public servant to serve the citizens of Augusta County as a Fire Rescue Lieutenant. We invite you to join our growing organization in a highly responsible position focused on the training, development, and mentoring of our career and volunteer firefighters.
Our goal is to complete the assessment center process on or around September 30, 2025. The list will become effective on October 16, 2025 and will be valid for six months or at the Fire Chief’s discretion. There will be a cut line established based on candidates scoring to be decided by the Fire Chief.
The Fire Rescue Lieutenant will be responsible for:
- Supports and works as part of a team in fulfilling the Mission, Vision, and Values of Augusta County Fire-Rescue;
- Provides input and recommendations to supervisory staff and administration, follows through with any final decisions made by upper management;
- Works in assuring that information is disseminated through the Chain of Command allowing for uniformity, consistency, and collaboration between administration and operations, reports directly to either a Captain Shift Supervisor or Division Commander up the chain of command to the Chief of Fire-Rescue;
- Supervises/mentors’ subordinate staff and is responsible to ensure all operational personnel assigned are knowledgeable of policies, procedures, and general orders, has primary responsibility to ensure daily assigned duties are carried out. Provides oversight as necessary to assure stations meet staffing and operational needs on a daily basis, with regard to career staff. Schedules time between stations as needed to provide for team interaction. Assures that personnel and equipment are maintained in a ready to respond state at all times;
- Assigns themselves to apparatus as part of the daily staffing at station assignment, based on other duties they need to fulfill;
- In the event there is a concern or issue with staffing assignments they are to notify their supervisor immediately;
- Responds to emergencies; performs all actions necessary to mitigate the incident including, but not limited to; assuming command, driving and operating equipment as necessary to assist in fire suppression, EMS intervention procedures, salvage, ventilation, overhaul, extrication, and whatever steps or actions are necessary in providing for the best interest of public safety;
- Reviews timesheets of assigned personnel, assuring accuracy with regard to hours worked, vacation and/or other leave. Submits up the Chain of Command following General Order;
- Responsible for ensuring all station reports are correct and submitted by deadline to Administration;
- Assists with and/or provides for training needs of staff and ensures that staff receives necessary training for assigned duties, reviews requests for professional development opportunities, assuring assigned staff have met requirements for present duties prior to forwarding additional training requests for advanced training;
- Addresses any concerns and/or deficiencies in apparatus, equipment, and/or personnel, and if necessary, passes up the chain of command to appropriate Captain or Division Commander;
- Mentors, coaches, counsels, and provides feedback on performance as needed, responsible for conducting probationary or annual evaluations of assigned staff;
- Participatesincontinuingtrainingandinstructionalprogramsbyindividual
- Conducts pre-incident surveys, inspections, and investigations of incidents as assigned, interacts and works with career and volunteer Officers alike in providing service;
- Attends meetings as required, or as necessary in performance of assigned duties;
- Performs related tasks as assigned or required.
The Organization
Augusta County Fire-Rescue (ACFR) is a combination department that covers 967 square miles with a population of 76,264. ACFR is responsible to staff 13 of the 17 stations within Augusta County. There are 4 County owned stations, with the remainder being owned by non-profit volunteer organizations. We have two shifts; a 24/48 for FF/EMT staff and a 24/72 work schedule for the EMS Division.
Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable firefighting and/or rescue experience.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must possess the following:
- 3 years of experience in a combination system
- Virginia Office of EMS Emergency Medical Technician or higher
- Class III EVOC
- VDFP Fire Officer I
- VDFP Fire Instructor I
- NIMS ICS 300
- VDFP ITR Module II
- VDFP Vehicle Extrication
- VDFP Mayday FF Down
- NFA Incident Safety Officer
- VDFP Driver Pump Operator (DPO)
- VDFP Driver Aerial Operator (DAO)
Preferred Qualifications or Ability to Obtain
- Fire Officer II
- Fire Instructor II
- VDEM Hazmat Technician
- VDFP Technical Rescue Technician
- ALS Provider
- NIMS ICS 400
- NFA Building Construction
- 3 years of experience in a management or supervisory role.
Salary / Benefit
Grade 27 Position Salary Range - $59,258 - $92,100
Other incentives are possible based on experience and education
Non-Exempt, VRS-Eligible to include Hazardous Duty Supplement, Benefits-Eligible.
Additional Information
Employment contingent upon successfully completing a criminal background check, drug test, and a department physical exam based on the NFPA 1582 Standard initially and yearly thereafter. Applicants must possess an appropriate valid driver’s license. All Fire-Rescue Department employees are subject to non-restrictive 24-hour call-back, irregular work hours, and various workstation assignments.
