Senior Substation Engineer – Transmission & Distribution
Location: Houston, TX
Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent
The Senior Substation Engineer will lead the preparation and execution of engineering design deliverables for new and modified high-voltage electrical power substations ranging from 13kV to 765kV. This role is responsible for guiding projects from conceptual design through construction, ensuring technical excellence, schedule adherence, budget control, and client satisfaction. The Senior Substation Engineer will apply advanced engineering judgment, mentor project team members, and serve as a technical leader throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities-
Lead substation projects from conceptual development through detailed design and project completion.

Lead the preparation and development of comprehensive substation design packages, including but not limited to:

Physical arrangements (above and below grade)
-
Protective relaying and control systems
-
Electrical studies such as grounding, lightning protection, and related analyses

Lighting and security systems
-

Lead the development of detailed substation calculations, including but not limited to:
-
Insulation coordination
-
AC station service
-
DC systems and battery sizing
-
Voltage drop calculations
-
Cable sizing and conduit fill
-

Lead the preparation of design sketches, cost estimates, equipment specifications, bills of materials, and supporting technical documentation.

Apply advanced knowledge of IEEE, NESC, and other applicable industry and utility standards, guides, specifications, and procedures.

Lead and perform field inspections of substation facilities on public and private utility systems.

Execute complex engineering assignments requiring the use of advanced tools, techniques, and methodologies, contributing to the development of new or improved processes and technologies.

Identify project issues, communicate risks, and lead resolution efforts as needed.

Manage project schedules and budgets for assigned deliverables under supervision.

Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary project teams to ensure deliverables meet client expectations and comply with internal QA/QC standards.

Perform design quality reviews to ensure accuracy, constructability, and compliance with applicable standards.

Interface with clients and external stakeholders to develop and maintain strong working relationships.

Lead the preparation of technical proposals, including scope definition, schedules, and budget estimates.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Comply with all applicable policies, procedures, and professional standards.
Education & Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited program and a minimum of 7 years of substation or related engineering experience (consulting experience preferred), OR

Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited program, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and a minimum of 7 years of substation or related engineering experience (consulting experience preferred).
