The DON ensures safe, effective, and compassionate nursing care for individuals undergoing withdrawal management and stabilization for substance use disorders. This role involves managing nursing staff, overseeing clinical operations, ensuring regulatory compliance, and promoting high standards of patient care in accordance with IndianaMHAS, Joint Commission, and facility protocols. DUTIES OF THE POSITION:
The duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Nursing Operations and Oversight
- Oversee all aspects of nursing care delivery, including assessments, withdrawal monitoring, medication administration, and patient safety.
- Ensure timely and accurate documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Develop and implement individualized nursing care plans in coordination with medical and behavioral health teams.
- Patient Care
- Conduct comprehensive medical evaluations upon patient admission, including history and physical exams.
- Conduct rounding on all patients in the withdrawal management program, including on scheduled days and as needed per the Medical Director.
- Develop and implement individualized detox and stabilization plans, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT) when appropriate.
- Monitor and manage withdrawal symptoms using established protocols (e.g., CIWA, COWS).
- Order and interpret labs and diagnostic tests; address abnormal results and coordinate further care as needed.
- Provide timely documentation of all patient encounters and updates in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Leadership and Supervision
- Hire, train, schedule, and evaluate nursing staff, including RNs and LPNs.
- Provide direct supervision, mentorship, and ongoing professional development for the nursing team.
- Facilitate daily shift reports and ensure appropriate nurse-to-patient staffing ratios.
- Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance
- Ensure adherence to IndianaMHAS and Joint Commission standards, including infection control, documentation, and medication safety.
- Lead nursing involvement in internal audits, quality assurance, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Maintain compliance with all licensure, certification, and accreditation requirements.
- Coordination and Communication
- Serve as a key member of the interdisciplinary leadership team.
- Collaborate with physicians, therapists, and administrative leadership to ensure cohesive and integrated care.
- Respond to incidents and critical situations with appropriate clinical judgment and urgency.
- Ability to understand, speak, read, write in English.
- Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence in English.
- Effectively communicate/speak before groups of customers or employees.
- Work all hours required to fulfill job duties and responsibilities (including weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed).
- Ability to carry/lift boxes weighing between 10 and 25 pounds.
- Must be able to ascend and descend stairs regularly as part of daily job duties.
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- College or University
- Nurse Practitioner (NP) licensed to practice in Indiana.
- Current DEA license, with waiver to prescribe buprenorphine (DATA 2000/X waiver) preferred or willingness to obtain.
- BLS/CPR certification (ACLS preferred).
- Minimum of 3–5 years of nursing experience, with 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
- Experience in addiction medicine, detoxification, behavioral health, or acute care setting preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of IndianaMHAS regulations and Joint Commission standards.
- Understanding Cultural Competence and how to successfully work with others from various cultures and backgrounds, as evident by demonstrating the ability to work with diverse groups.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong understanding of office administrator responsibilities, systems, and procedures.
