What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Design Engineer position at AppleOne Employment Services?
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering team in a lead-level individual contributor role. This position is ideal for an engineer who thrives on solving complex design challenges, working independently, and managing projects from concept through manufacturing.
Reporting directly to the Engineering Manager, this engineer will become a key technical resource responsible for mechanical design, custom equipment development, manufacturing support, and engineering documentation. This is not an entry-level design role—it is an opportunity for an experienced engineer to take ownership of specialized projects while helping expand the engineering department.
Responsibilities
- Design custom mechanical equipment using SolidWorks.
- Develop complete manufacturing drawings from concept through production.
- Engineer non-standard equipment and custom customer solutions.
- Review project specifications and create mechanical designs to meet customer requirements.
- Support difficult quoting and estimating efforts through engineering expertise.
- Manage projects independently from design through manufacturing release.
- Work closely with manufacturing to ensure designs are practical and manufacturable.
- Troubleshoot engineering and production challenges.
- Participate in occasional customer site visits alongside senior engineering leadership.
- Maintain engineering documentation, BOMs, and drawing revisions.
- Collaborate with engineering and operations while serving as a technical leader on assigned projects.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (required).
- 5–10 years of mechanical design engineering experience.
- Advanced SolidWorks experience.
- Experience creating manufacturing drawings from scratch.
- Strong understanding of machining, fabrication, welding, and manufacturing methods.
- Ability to manage projects independently with minimal supervision.
- Excellent mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and organizational abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing bulk material handling equipment.
- Experience with conveyors, screw conveyors, hoppers, feeders, chutes, augers, or similar equipment.
- Knowledge of fabrication and heavy industrial manufacturing.
- Exposure to programming, automation, or controls is a plus.
- Experience supporting custom engineered equipment or special projects.
What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate is a hands-on mechanical engineer who enjoys taking ownership of projects rather than simply completing design tasks. You'll be trusted to receive projects, develop complete engineering solutions, and work closely with manufacturing to bring those designs to life. We're looking for someone interested in building a long-term career with an established manufacturer while becoming an integral part of the engineering team.
