Position Summary, Duties and Responsibilities

As an art instructor at Simms Street Recreation Center, you will help student artists discover and explore their creative side, meet new people, and grow their love for different mediums. - Plan and instruct art and/or pottery classes, workshops, and open studio sessions appropriate to participant age and skill level
- Demonstrate proper techniques for hand-building, wheel throwing, glazing, and firing (as applicable)
- Prepare lesson plans that encourage creativity, skill development, and artistic confidence
- Maintain a safe and clean studio environment, including setup and breakdown of materials and equipment
- Monitor participants to ensure safe use of tools, equipment, and materials
- Load, fire, and unload kilns following established safety procedures (if applicable)
- Track attendance and communicate class progress, supply needs, and issues to recreation staff
- Provide positive customer service and foster a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere for all participants
- Follow all recreation center policies, safety standards, and emergency procedures
- Assist with special events, exhibitions, or community art programs as assigned
Job Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Demonstrated experience in art education and/or ceramics/pottery instruction
- Knowledge of basic to intermediate pottery techniques, materials, and studio safety practices
- Ability to work effectively with diverse age groups and skill levels
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to manage a class in a positive and professional manner
- CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain after employment)
Education and Experience
- Graduation from high school or completion of GED.
- Two (2) years of previous experience in ceramics and other specialized art forms.
- Previous teaching experience preferred.
LICENSES CERTIFICATES:
CPR/AED and first aid certifications are encouraged.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT:
Must demonstrate proper technique, safety knowledge, and use of all art equipment.
Work Environment
Physical Activities:
- Ability to stand for extended periods and work in an active studio environment.
- Ability to left and move materials and equipment weighting approximately 25-40lbs.
Work Environment
- Work is performed primarily in an art or pottery studio setting, which may involve exposure to dust, clay materials, glazes, kilns, heat, fumes, and moderate noise
