Role Overview
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) supports patient care by assisting with assessments, medication administration, dressing changes, trach care, NG tube insertion and care, ostomy management, and discharge education. When patients are present, the LPN collaborates with Registered Nurses (RNs), assisting with patient loads and care plans. During full units, they work with RNs managing high-acuity patients or heavy patient loads.
Key Responsibilities
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) supports patient care by assisting with assessments, medication administration, dressing changes, trach care, NG tube insertion and care, ostomy management, and discharge education. When patients are present, the LPN collaborates with Registered Nurses (RNs), assisting with patient loads and care plans. During full units, they work with RNs managing high-acuity patients or heavy patient loads.
Key Responsibilities
- Passes medications, including IV piggybacks and fluids (excluding IV push meds).
- Charts assessments and updates care plans, following initial assessments by RNs.
- Communicates with physicians/advanced practice providers to coordinate care and receive orders.
- Performs dressing changes, trach care, NG tube care, and ostomy management.
- Reinforces patient education and discharge instructions.
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certification from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days, from the American Heart Association (AHA).
- College diploma as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with RNs and healthcare team members.
