What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shelter Support Staff position at Amos House?
Shelter Support Staff
$20.00 / hour plus full benefits · Full-Time · Providence, RI
Amos House Shelter · 100 Randall Street
The job
Our shelter at 100 Randall Street is home to more than 50 families and older adults, including over 100 children, while they work toward permanent housing.
Shelter Support Staff are the people who make that building work. You are on the floor, visible and available — welcoming people in, walking the building, answering questions, helping with meals and laundry, checking rooms, and stepping in when something needs sorting out. You are the person a guest finds when they need something, and the person who notices when something is off.
It is not a desk job and it is not a security job. It is somewhere in between, and the balance is the skill: holding expectations while treating people with respect.
The schedule
We are hiring for multiple shifts
Shelter coverage runs around the clock, so evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts are part of the work. You will know your schedule.
What you’d do
- Welcome guests and help them get oriented to shared living and daily routines
- Stay visible and available throughout your shift — common areas, hallways, dining room
- Conduct room checks and walkthroughs
- Support meal service, laundry, linens, supplies, and room turnover
- Notice, document, and report concerns, incidents, and safety issues
- Step in calmly when conflict or crisis comes up, and know when to escalate
- Help keep shared spaces clean, organized, and welcoming
What we’re looking for
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience
- Someone who can be warm and hold a boundary at the same time. This is the whole job.
- Steadiness when things get loud or tense — you do not escalate with the room
- Good eyes. You notice what changed and say something.
- Able to work on your own and as part of a team
- Respect for people whose lives look nothing like yours
Helpful, but not required
You do not need shelter experience. If you have worked in human services, behavioral health, recovery, residential care, security, caregiving, food service, or any job where you dealt with people all day, that counts.
- Experience with homelessness, trauma, behavioral health, or recovery
- CPR, First Aid, CPRS, CHW, or similar certification
- Bilingual or multilingual — we would really like to hear from you
Being straight with you about the work
This job is physical and it is emotionally demanding. You will be on your feet, moving through the building, up and down stairs, lifting up to 35 pounds. You will be awake and engaged for your whole shift.
You will also be around people in crisis. Some days are hard. Some days someone will be angry at you for enforcing a rule you did not write. The people who do well here are the ones who can take that without taking it personally, and who go home at the end of the shift.
You will not be doing it alone. You will have a supervisor, a team, and people to call.

- Health, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k) with employer match
- Life and AD&D insurance

About the background check
We hire people with criminal records. That is not a dealbreaker here, and it never has been. Because this role works directly with children and older adults, some convictions do disqualify. Most do not. If you are not sure where you stand, apply and ask us.
