Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Stepdown (ACU) position requiring stepdown acuity experience, strip reading, and drip titration skills in a stroke, trauma, and vascular unit.
Details
- Work in a 30-bed Advanced Care Unit (Stepdown) with all private rooms at an acute care hospital
- Designated stroke, trauma, and vascular unit with patients including carotid surgeries, fempops, DKA, AKA, post-caths with TR bands and femoral access
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4; 3 PCTs per shift at a 1:10 ratio
- RNs are required to read, verify, and sign off on telemetry strips; monitor techs are present on the unit
- Titratable drips include Cardizem (per physician orders), insulin, and heparin
- Respiratory equipment in use includes CPAP, BiPAP, and high-flow oxygen
- Sheaths are not pulled on this unit
- 12-hour day shifts (0700–1930) with self-scheduling and block scheduling available based on unit needs
- Every other weekend required; day shift weekends are Saturday/Sunday; night shift weekends are Friday/Saturday/Sunday
- Charge nurse coverage 24/7; night charge nurse always carries a patient assignment
- Travelers are first to float and may float down to Med/Surg Tele or up to ICU (ACU-status patients only); may also float to CV Stepdown
- Epic EMR used in this position
- On-call requirements are very rare
Requirements
- Active WV or compact RN license required
- Current certifications required: BLS (AHA), ACLS (AHA), and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Stepdown acuity experience with stroke, trauma, and vascular patient populations required
- Ability to read and interpret cardiac rhythm strips required
- Experience titrating drips required
- BSN not required
- Valid driver's license copy required for consideration
Additional Information
- Orientation consists of day 1 with HR and clinical educator followed by shadowing, day 2 shadowing, and day 3 independent practice
- Royal blue scrubs required; scrub jackets are optional but must be an actual scrub jacket — no hoodies or sweat jackets
- Holiday coverage may be required based on unit needs
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from this WVU facility to be eligible
- Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before reapplying
- Travelers may not work within the WVU system for longer than one cumulative year without a 2-year break
- EKG testing may be required as part of the hiring process for this stepdown unit
- A 13-week contract for this position
