Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Stepdown/Floor position at a Level I Trauma academic medical center in West Virginia, requiring telemetry strip reading ability and nights availability.
Details
- Work setting is an acute care, Level I Trauma hospital
- Unit 7 West is a combined Stepdown and Floor unit with 32 total beds (12 Stepdown, 20 Floor)
- Patient population includes typical med-surg diagnoses: chest pain, COPD, AMS, pneumonia, UTI, abdominal pain, overflow for most services, and GIP hospice
- Stepdown nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:3; Floor ratio is 1:4–6
- Stepdown patients may have titratable drips; floor patients receive PCAs, heparin, and similar set-rate infusions
- Telemetry monitoring is in use on the unit; RNs must read strips in conjunction with telemetry monitor techs
- Respiratory therapy (RT) manages ventilators, CPAP, BiPap, and related equipment
- Unit is supported by a dedicated free charge nurse and a house supervisor available at all times
- Nurse aide staffing runs up to 4 aides when fully staffed for 32 beds
- Charting is done in Epic
- 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Two weekends required per schedule
- Holiday coverage follows the permanent staff holiday schedule
- Travelers may be floated to any floor or stepdown unit within the facility
Requirements
- Active WV RN license or a compact RN license recognized in WV required
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Current BLS certification required
- BSN not required
- Ability to read telemetry strips independently required
- A valid, unexpired driver's license must be provided for consideration
- Candidate's driver's license address must reflect a residence more than 50 miles from the facility
Additional Information
- Provide direct patient care in both stepdown and floor capacities, managing a mixed acuity population
- Scrub color requirement is royal blue
- COVID-19 vaccination is required; medical or religious exemption requests are available
- Candidates who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before being considered
- Candidates who have accumulated one year of travel experience within the WVU system must also take a 2-year break before returning
- Two references are required for consideration: one supervisor reference and one peer or additional supervisor reference
- A skills checklist completed within the past year is required for consideration
- Candidates may only be considered for one WVU facility position at a time
