Senior Cost Accountant – Inventory
Position Overview
The Senior Cost Accountant – Inventory is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and proper accounting treatment of all inventory-related transactions, balances, and costing methodologies across the organization.
This role serves as a critical link between Accounting and Operations, driving inventory accuracy, strengthening controls, and providing actionable insights into cost of goods sold (COGS) and inventory performance. The ideal candidate will bring a strong analytical mindset, deep inventory expertise, and the ability to partner cross-functionally to improve processes and operational efficiency.
This position plays a key role in supporting financial reporting accuracy, inventory optimization, and scalable operational practices.
Key Responsibilities
Inventory Accounting & Reconciliation
• Reconcile monthly inventory general ledger balances to physical counts and system records, investigating and resolving variances
• Review, validate, and approve inventory adjustments to ensure accuracy and proper accounting treatment
• Support physical inventory counts and reconciliations as needed
Costing & Analysis
• Analyze cost of goods sold (COGS) and inventory trends to provide actionable insights
• Evaluate and ensure consistent application of inventory costing methodologies in accordance with company policy and accounting standards
• Identify and report on excess, slow-moving, and obsolete inventory, providing recommendations for optimization
Inventory Controls & Process Improvement
• Develop, implement, and maintain inventory control policies, procedures, and best practices
• Lead and oversee cycle count programs across multiple locations, ensuring compliance and timeliness
• Investigate discrepancies, identify root causes, and partner with operations to implement corrective actions
• Continuously identify opportunities to improve processes, controls, and system utilization
Reporting & Cross-Functional Partnership
• Prepare and deliver monthly inventory and financial reports, highlighting trends, risks, and opportunities
• Serve as the primary point of contact for inventory accounting matters across the organization
• Collaborate closely with operations and branch teams to ensure alignment on inventory management practices
• Provide guidance and support on inventory-related questions, processes, and controls
Qualifications
Education & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 4 years of accounting experience, including at least 2 years focused on inventory or cost accounting
• Experience working in a multi-site or operationally complex environment preferred
Technical Skills
• Strong understanding of inventory valuation methods (e.g., weighted average cost) and cycle count programs
• Hands-on experience with ERP systems and reporting tools
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data analysis
