The Air Force Civilian Service (AFCS) is looking for a Temporary Ground Transportation Operator (WG-5703-08) to work at the 97th Logistics Readiness Squadron located at Altus AFB, Altus, OK. In this position you will operate one or more types of gasoline, diesel, or electric powered wheeled vehicles typically having a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of more than 32,000 pounds. Drives over public roads (or equivalent) in a full range of traffic conditions and at highway speeds to transport cargo. Operates buses capable of carrying 16 or more passengers on public roads (or equivalent) in a full range of traffic conditions and at highway speeds. - U.S. Citizenship - Knowledge of operating one or more gasoline, diesel, or electric powered wheeled vehicles with a GVW of over 32,000 pounds such as truck tractors with semi or full trailers, heavy load in-line trucks, or interstate motor coaches. - Knowledge of cargo handling and hauling and techniques for safeguarding and protecting cargo. - Knowledge of traffic and safety regulations, practices, and procedures pertaining to motor vehicle and forklift operation. - Knowledge of operating one or more electric, LPG, or diesel-powered forklifts. - Knowledge of operating buses capable of carrying 16 or more passengers. - Ability to judge road/traffic conditions and read maps to determine the shortest and safest route; interpret instructions, specifications, etc. related to motor vehicle, forklift, and power take-off unit operation and preventive maintenance; and meet pickup and delivery deadlines and schedules. Duties and Responsibilities - Drives tractor trailers and/or other vehicles typically having a GVW of more than 32,000 pounds. Operates vehicles to transport supplies, materials, equipment, and/or tools. Drives over rough, uneven terrain or unimproved roads, interstates, steep and winding grades, etc. exercising caution when backing to load/unload at docks, ramps, or similar locations. Couples/uncouples tractors and trailers and connects/disconnects air brakes and electrical lines. Determines manner and sequence of loading to achieve balance and protection for fragile items. Checks load in transit on longer hauls. May load/unload vehicles by hand with or without assistance. May operate power take-off equipment such as hydraulic dumps or lifts. Reads maps and judges road/traffic conditions to determine the shortest and safest route. - Operates one or more electric, LPG, or diesel-powered forklift trucks to facilitate loading and unloading duties. May be required to transport bulky and unwieldy items. Occasionally drives outside over rough surfaces. - Drives one or more types of passenger buses which carry 16 or more passengers. Drives predetermined and/or scheduled routes or special runs. Reads maps and judges road/traffic conditions to determine the shortest and safest route. Provides friendly, polite, and courteous service. Uses expert judgment in making wide turns, braking, and backing and turning the bus around safely. Maneuvers the buses in difficult traffic and in a variety of constricted locations while maintaining time schedules. Also, ensures that the buses do not contain more passengers than legally allowed. Enforces passenger seatbelt use. May check I.D. cards to ensure authorization of passengers as required. - Performs operator maintenance, such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires, cleaning and washing of vehicles, and performing inspection checklists to ensure safe and proper operation. - Maintains records and documents actions, such as operator inspection checklists/forms and accident/incident reports. Checks material transported against invoices, verifies status of cargo, and obtains signature of receiving personnel. Uses two-way radio (or other device) to maintain communications with dispatcher/supervisor on assignments and locations. - Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing.
