Position:            Speech-Language Pathologist (Full-Time)

Location:           Multiple Locations

Reports To:       Director of Special Programs

Compensation:  Per Bargaining Unit Agreement

Start Date:         2025-2026 School Year

 

Position Summary

Screen, assess, and identify students with communication disorders that adversely affect their educational progress. Develop and provide direct and indirect services within the student's educational setting, based on established IEP goals and objectives. 

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Complies with the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (MARSE)
  • Completes speech-language evaluations and annual reviews
  • Selects, administers, and interprets appropriate formal and informal assessments
  • Ensures that all speech-language evaluations for initial referrals and re-evaluations are conducted within the required timelines
  • Develops goals and objectives aligned with core standards for each eligible student's Individualized Educational Program (IEP) in collaboration with teachers, staff, and parents
  • Provides speech-language services as indicated on each student's IEP
  • Maintains accurate, timely records of progress and service
  • Reports progress to parents as scheduled in students' IEPs
  • Supports school leadership with the development and implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) practices
  • Collaborates with school staff and IEP team members to implement effective programs and services
  • Supports staff and parents in implementing speech and language intervention strategies
  • Participates in building Student Assistance Team (SAT) as requested
  • Participates in district-wide, departmental, and other professional meetings, as directed
  • Completes Medicaid documentation monthly and Random Moment in Time Studies
  • Collaborates in the development of the Review of Existing Evaluation Data (REED) and Evaluation Plan for initial and three (3) year re-evaluations
  • Initiates and maintains ongoing communication with parents and staff to assist with the understanding of speech-language development, evaluation results, and student performance and concerns
  • Provides home-based activities, when appropriate
  • Participates in professional development opportunities
  • Additional duties as assigned

Employment Qualifications

  • EDUCATION: Master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology or Teacher of Speech and Language Impairments per R340.1796.
  • LICENSE: Michigan License to practice Speech and Language Pathology, CCC-SLP (ASHA) 
  • EXPERIENCE: Preference will be given to those candidates with prior school-based experience, particularly those with extensive AAC knowledge and experience with various systems.  
  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No supervisory responsibilities.

  • Training in the assessment and interpretation of information
  • Knowledge of the implementation of the IEP process
  • Demonstrated skills using computers and technology throughout the learning process
  • Conflict management and resolution skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people. Possess and demonstrate an understanding of various cultural and socioeconomic characteristics
  • Frequent telephone and computer use. Understanding of basic computer programs necessary, particularly those used for communication (word processing, internet, email, etc.)
  • Remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen and small numbers.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
