  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety records, including employee certifications, OSHA logs, and other required documentation.
  • Use Excel to manage safety procedures, track workforce updates, and organize safety-related data and reports.
  • Administer quarterly employee training on the safety manual and ensure all personnel understand updates and changes.
  • Prepare and deliver specific safety training modules as needed, including sessions scheduled during downtime such as inclement weather days.
  • Support incident and accident protocol by understanding proper procedures, assisting with investigations, and helping implement corrective actions.
  • Manage and support the fit test program to ensure employees are properly fitted for required safety equipment.
  • Oversee Operator Qualification (OQ) training and maintain the OQ program to ensure employees meet required qualifications.
  • Conduct new employee safety training to ensure all new hires understand field and office safety expectations before starting work.
  • Coordinate the safety equipment program in collaboration with facilities and equipment personnel to maintain inspections of air supply tanks, air monitors, rescue equipment including lanyards and tripods, lift chains, fire extinguishers, shop equipment, and other safety-related tools.
  • Review and verify subcontractor safety qualifications and monitor adherence to company and regulatory safety requirements.
  • Participate in MOD and other safety-related meetings, contributing safety insights and updates as needed.
  • Maintain proper OSHA posters and ensure they are current and displayed in required locations.
  • Prepare documentation for OSHA hours and incident reporting and coordinate with internal stakeholders to ensure timely submission.
  • Complete and manage customer safety questionnaires, including pre-qualification and re-qualification forms, to support business and project requirements.
  • Provide general safety support to leadership and assist with additional safety-related duties as assigned.

Essential Skills

  • Familiarity with OSHA standards and the ability to apply them in field and office environments.
  • Ability to provide safety oversight in construction and utility settings.
  • Strong attention to detail in record keeping, documentation, and safety audits.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 1–2 years of safety experience, with 2–5 years preferred for candidates with more advanced safety backgrounds.
  • Experience communicating effectively with construction personnel at all levels on safety matters.
  • Background in underground projects or civil and utility work, as opposed to vertical construction.
  • Experience in the electric utility or utility industry environments.
  • Experience as a Safety Specialist, Safety professional, or in construction safety or operations roles.
  • Ability to manage multiple safety programs such as fit testing, OQ training, and safety equipment inspections.

  • Interest in growing a career in construction safety, particularly for recent graduates or early-career professionals seeking a first opportunity in the construction field.

Work Environment

The Safety Specialist works primarily in the field, traveling to various electrical utility and construction job sites across New Jersey, including areas ranging from Princeton to Bergen County. The role involves frequent visits to active job sites where employees perform fieldwork in outdoor and changing weather conditions. The environment includes construction and civil utility settings, vehicle and equipment inspections, and coordination with field crews, subcontractors, and office staff.
