Job Description

This onsite role oversees the energy isolation program across a large data center construction campus, ensuring that all systems with stored energy are controlled safely and in accordance with established policies and procedures. The Energy Marshal works closely with general contractors, trades, commissioning teams, and Environmental, Health, and Safety partners to verify safe working conditions for construction, commissioning, maintenance, and operations activities. This position requires a highly experienced self-starter who can operate independently in a complex commercial construction environment and provide expert guidance on electrical and mechanical energization, startup, and commissioning.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the energy isolation program on the construction site for all systems with stored energy across the assigned data center campus.
  • Ensure all activities related to the energy isolation process are coordinated and executed by the general contractor and trades in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Review documentation such as procedures, job hazard analyses, and permits to confirm safe working conditions have been established for construction, commissioning, maintenance, and operations.
  • Audit the energy isolation program regularly to verify compliance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborate with construction and commissioning teams to establish safe conditions for testing and validating the installation, operation, and performance of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems.
  • Support the management of electrical infrastructure throughout the data center campus, ranging from single large-capacity facilities to multiple smaller facilities.
  • Validate general contractor safe work practices and Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedures for systems at 120V and below, 480V, 7.2–14kV, and 25kV.
  • Trace electrical power through double and triple redundant electrical systems and verify zero-energy states before work begins.
  • Hold general contractors and electrical, mechanical, and equipment vendor technicians accountable to established policies and safety standards.
  • Partner closely with Environmental, Health, and Safety teams to drive operational excellence in all aspects of the control of hazardous energy.
  • Train new and existing employees on defined energy isolation processes and procedures.
  • Communicate and coordinate effectively with project management and trades personnel to align on work plans, risks, and safety requirements.
  • Work effectively in a commercial construction site environment alongside highly knowledgeable and qualified professionals in their respective disciplines.
  • Apply knowledge of electrical and mechanical equipment energization, startup, and commissioning to support safe and efficient project execution.
  • Demonstrate strong self-direction by taking initiative, prioritizing tasks, and maintaining progress with minimal supervision.

Essential Skills

  • At least 10 years of experience in roles involving control of hazardous energy, electrical systems, or data center environments.
  • Strong experience with the control of hazardous energy, including risk assessments and work procedure review for power distribution, lighting, grounding, control systems, pneumatics, fluid systems, and mechanical energies.
  • Established understanding of electrical theory and its practical application through maintenance and operation of critical electrical equipment such as paralleling switchgear, redundant UPS systems, DC battery strings, multi-source electrical utility switchgear, and standby diesel generators.
  • Practical experience with Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) and verifying MEP systems are in a zero-energy state before work begins.
  • Knowledge of construction techniques, terminology, and documentation, including the ability to interpret blueprints, electrical one-line diagrams, and construction drawings.
  • Electrical experience in commercial or industrial environments, ideally with data centers or similar critical facilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a self-starter who can hit the ground running with minimal direction.
  • Proven experience as an Energy Marshal, or in comparable roles such as quality assurance or electrical oversight on large construction or data center projects.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills for working with project management, trades, and technical teams.
  • Local experience or current residence in the Wenatchee, WA area, with the ability to work 100% onsite.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Prior experience in data center environments, including exposure to commissioning activities.
  • Experience working on large-scale technology or hyperscale data center projects.
  • Familiarity with complex, double and triple redundant electrical distribution systems.
  • Historical experience in Energy Marshal roles, quality assurance, or electrical oversight for major construction projects.
  • Comfort working closely with Environmental, Health, and Safety teams to support continuous improvement in hazardous energy control.
  • No formal degree or specific certifications required; equivalent experience is highly valued.
  • Ability to train and mentor others on energy isolation processes and safe work practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to documentation review, audits, and procedural compliance.

Work Environment

This role is based 100% onsite at a multi-building data center campus in Wenatchee, WA, covering multiple facilities within the EAT12/13/14 campus. The standard schedule is approximately 40 hours per week, typically organized into 10-hour workdays, with the expectation of working in and around active construction, commissioning, and operational environments. You will work closely with general contractors, trades, commissioning teams, and Environmental, Health, and Safety professionals in a fast-paced, safety-focused setting. The work involves frequent presence in energized and de-energized electrical areas, mechanical rooms, and construction zones, where adherence to strict safety protocols is essential. The role requires the use of a laptop, docking station, headphones, and standard personal protective equipment, including a safety vest, cut-rated gloves, hard hat, safety glasses, and composite-toed boots.
