Job Description
This role focuses on providing construction materials testing and inspection services for a wide range of building and infrastructure projects across Central Ohio. The Construction Materials Inspector performs field tests and inspections on materials such as concrete, soil, asphalt, and aggregates to verify compliance with project specifications, codes, and industry standards. The position is field-based on active construction sites and requires comfort working outdoors in varying weather conditions while collaborating closely with contractors and project stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Perform field testing of construction materials, including concrete, soils, aggregates, and asphalt at the time of placement on active construction sites.
- Interpret project specifications, plans, and working drawings to understand testing requirements and inspection criteria.
- Conduct field inspections, sampling, and testing using appropriate equipment and maintain that equipment in proper working condition.
- Obtain and record field data in a clear, legible, and organized manner in accordance with project plans, specifications, and internal requirements.
- Generate and compile accurate and timely field reports that document test results, observations, and any nonconforming conditions.
- Record daily installed construction quantities to support project documentation and quality control.
- Communicate effectively with team members on the construction site, including contractors and owners’ representatives, to coordinate testing activities and share results.
- Keep all relevant parties fully informed of testing outcomes, field conditions, and any issues that may impact project quality or schedule.
- Travel locally to various project sites using a company vehicle or personal vehicle, depending on availability.
- Follow safety protocols and site-specific requirements while working on construction sites in all weather conditions.
Essential Skills
- Prior construction experience is strongly preferred, including comfort working on active construction sites and the ability to read and interpret specifications and drawings.
- Ability to interpret and apply construction plans, specifications, and working drawings to field testing and inspection activities.
- Willingness and ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions throughout the year.
- Willingness to travel locally to various job sites as required by project needs.
- Willingness and ability to work a variable schedule, including overtime and weekends, depending on workload and weather conditions.
- High school diploma or equivalent education.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Strong verbal communication skills to interact with contractors, owners’ representatives, and internal project staff.
- Ability to accurately obtain, record, and organize field data and prepare clear field reports.
- Comfort working around construction equipment and materials while adhering to safety practices.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Prior construction materials testing experience on transportation or private development projects, including work aligned with state department of transportation requirements.
- Experience with construction materials testing for asphalt, concrete, soils, and aggregates.
- ODOT Asphalt Level 2 Technician certification or other relevant ODOT inspection certifications.
- American Concrete Institute (ACI) certifications such as Field Testing Technician, Aggregate Testing Technician, and Concrete Strength Testing Technician.
- Experience using a nuclear density gauge for soil or asphalt compaction testing.
- NICET certifications or other relevant construction materials testing (CMT) certifications.
- Familiarity with construction materials testing procedures and standards for concrete strength testing, soil testing, asphalt testing, and aggregate testing.
- Willingness to obtain additional certifications with employer support, including ACI, ODOT, NICET, and other CMT-related credentials.
- Basic understanding of blueprint reading and construction documentation.
Work Environment
This is a field-based role working primarily on active construction sites across Central Ohio. The position requires working outdoors year-round in a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow. The schedule is variable and may include overtime and weekend work based on project demands, workload, and weather-related constraints. Travel to multiple job sites is required and is typically local, using either a company truck or a personal vehicle depending on availability. The work involves regular use of testing equipment such as nuclear density gauges and other construction materials testing tools, as well as frequent interaction with contractors, project staff, and owners’ representatives. The environment is fast-paced and project-driven, with a strong focus on safety, quality, and adherence to construction standards. Dress is appropriate for construction sites, including suitable outdoor workwear and personal protective equipment as required by site and safety policies.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Columbus, OH.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $24.00 - $30.00/hr.
