Job Title: Chemical Operator

Job Description

The position exists to support all activities related to the operation of the Allentown Pilot Plant. The Pilot Plant Operator role utilizes process knowledge and operations experience to safely and proficiently operate processes within a pilot plant for process development scale-up activities and production of new products in a multi-purpose facility. This pilot plant supports several businesses. Projects change on a weekly basis, and many of the products are on critical timelines for customer trials and sales. New projects may go through a safety review process requiring procedure development and possibly equipment modifications. The role includes performing instructions per test plans, maintaining batch sheets, logging data, and correcting, maintaining, participating in safety reviews, and building process equipment as needed.

Responsibilities

• Conduct the operation of the pilot plant to support process development and scale-up of new products and productivity programs.
• Follow operating procedures to ensure safe, and efficient operation of the pilot plant facility.
• Operate and perform checks on process equipment and monitor and record process conditions.
• Manage overall operation, including 10-12 process vessels, distillation, filtration, solids processing, analytical equipment, and operation of a fork truck.
• Document knowledge gained from development work including observations in a notebook or batch sheet.
• Actively participate in the EH&S of the pilot plant operation including applying site safety policies, drafting procedures and job safety analyses, participating in process hazard reviews, maintaining storage of raw materials and disposal of hazardous waste, and writing permits for support and maintenance activities.
• Suggest and make equipment modifications to meet new process requirements in support of active projects.
• Support the Pilot Plant operations by ordering equipment, raw materials, and supplies, and performing analytical on raw materials and products.

Essential Skills

• Experience in a Chemical Pilot Plant as an operator, handler, or technician (4 years).
• Mechanical aptitude.
• Understanding of safety and risks.
• Ability to lift, bend, and carry items as required.
• Experience with high pressure reactors.
• Knowledge of chemical processing and manufacturing.
• Associate’s degree in Chemistry (preferred).

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with distillation, filtration, and solids processing.
• Ability to operate analytical equipment and a fork truck.
• Ability to move 450lb drums using a two-wheel cart.

Work Environment

The work environment involves hazardous risks working with chemicals and physical requirements such as lifting and moving heavy drums. The pilot plant is a small facility located across from the R&D building. It can often be hot inside the plant.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $36.00/hr.
