The Special Education Services Assistant/Special Education is responsible for supporting the delivery of quality educational services to students with disabilities incarcerated in adult correctional facilities. This position ensures that all instructional and programmatic responsibilities related to special education are implemented in full compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, guidelines, and guidelines. Listed below are the primary responsibilities for the position; however, other professional duties may be assigned by the Director of Special Education Services and/or Dean of Students to meet the needs of the College.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Process referrals for individuals potentially in need of special education services.Manage timelines and complete all required documentation to support the placement of students in special education.Serve as a member and/or facilitator on Eligibility and IEP Teams to determine the need for evaluation and eligibility per federal and state guidelines.Administer required evaluations and develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).Support and consult with instructors who work with special education students in both regular and alternative education settings.Ensure confidentiality and secure maintenance of all special education records.Monitor special education services for students on assigned caseloads to ensure compliance and quality.Coordinate and facilitate all eligibility determinations and IEP meetings.Oversee the timely renewal of annual IEPs and three-year re-evaluations (continued eligibility) meetings for special education students.Collaborate with Special Education Assistants (both Special and General Education) to ensure the provision of a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE).Complete all documentation and reports accurately and within required timelines.Provide instruction/resources to students with disabilities.Participate in professional development, in-service training, and continuing education to maintain proficiency in Special Education and Correctional Education.Attend monthly mandatory staff/site meetings and any additional meetings called by the Dean of Students, Director and/or Coordinator of Special Education Services.Serve on institutional committees as assigned to represent the Special Education Services department.Maintain eligibility to access and perform duties within all Department of Corrections (DOC) facilities. This status must be maintained for continued employment.Understand and support the philosophy and mission of the Alabama Community College system.Demonstrate sensitivity to and commitment toward cultural diversity and inclusivity.Must be eligible to enter any/all Department of Corrections (DOC) to perform the job duties and maintain this status for continued employment.Adhere to policies and guidelines established by the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) Board of Trustees, Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC), and J.F.
