Laboratory Technician – Clinical Laboratory – Full Time/DaysCategory: Laboratory Technician, Clinical LaboratoryEmployee Type: Regular, Full Time (1.0 FTE)Required Education: High school diploma or GEDJob ObjectiveThe Laboratory Technician performs a variety of clinical laboratory duties including collection and processing of biological specimens, basic equipment operation, maintenance and calibration, and preparation of specimens for reference laboratories. The role also includes monitoring special collection requirements, assisting with orientation, training and competency activities, and communicating with clinical staff regarding test orders, specimen status, and testing.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesTechnicalOrganize laboratory orders by priority and specimen type to ensure proper collection and handling.Answer inquiries regarding test orders and specimen availability and report verified test results to clinical staff.Record temperatures, report out-of-range values, and maintain required logs, worksheets, and charts.Non-TechnicalOperate the laboratory and hospital information systems required for the role, including downtime procedures.Resolve inquiries regarding pending orders and specimen availability and ensure work areas, equipment, and glassware are cleaned daily.Complete inventory, organize supplies and reagents, assist with orientation, training and competency assessments, and participate in continuing education and annual competency testing.Additional DutiesDepartment TechnicianOperate equipment and perform testing within the scope of training and established protocols.Recognize instrument malfunctions, perform routine maintenance, and take appropriate corrective action.Processing TechnicianAssess workload and coordinate phlebotomy staffing assignments.Handle unique specimen collection requirements, process specimens for reference testing, prepare special shipments, and process 24‑hour urine collections.Pathology TechnicianProcess and send specimens for additional studies (e.g., bone marrow, cytogenetics, flow cytometry).Prepare and label slides for review, file slides and blocks, and assist with frozen sections, staining, and labeling.Distribute and file pathology reports and documentation, track materials received and released, and communicate with other departments to resolve pathology-related needs.Accession, label, and create cassettes for surgical and cytology specimens; maintain data integrity in information systems.Set up grossing areas, maintain and clean equipment (including stain lines and cryostats), manage chemicals and tissue disposal per guidelines, and support inspections, projects, and overall departmental operations.Non-Essential DutiesAssist with routine phlebotomy as needed.Stock supplies in various departments, transport specimens and supplies between main and satellite labs, and provide general support to laboratory staff.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledgeBasic computer operations and use of information systems.Safe handling of biological specimens and specimen collection requirements.Recognition of deviations from normal standards and age-specific considerations.SkillsVenipuncture and accurate, precise specimen processing and testing.Effective oral and written communication.AbilitiesFollow directions accurately and learn specimen, testing, and instrument requirements.Recognize instrument malfunction and take appropriate action.Use information systems and reference materials effectively and interact with patients, the public, and peers in a courteous, professional manner.Core CompetenciesAccountability and action orientation.Customer focus and compassion.Effective communication and teamwork.Ethics, values, integrity, and trust.Education, Experience, and CertificationsHigh school diploma or GED required.Approximately one year of clinical laboratory experience preferred, including phlebotomy and acute care hospital experience.Current Certified Phlebotomy Technician I or II license (State of California).Current CPR certification for applicable assignments (e.g., blood donor center staff).Conduct, Compliance, and Physical RequirementsAdhere to leave, timekeeping, dress code, safety, confidentiality, and all hospital and departmental policies and regulatory requirements.Function effectively under pressure, organize work and priorities, and contribute to quality improvement, education, and a team-based environment with high patient/customer satisfaction.Perform duties in a standard clinical laboratory setting, which may involve long periods of standing or sitting and frequent handling of small biological specimens (generally under 10 lbs).
