Job Summary:

As the Manager of Consumables Engineering, you will collaborate with the Director of Mechanical Engineering to coordinate tasks and assignments of your staff across projects within the Consumables Engineering department. The projects include the design, implementation, and test of electrodes and consumables for present and future ZOLL devices. You will also ensure all engineering projects, initiatives, and processes are in conformance with ZOLL’s established policies and objectives. The position is technical in nature and the applicant must have solid mechanical and sustaining engineering experience.

The Manager of Consumables Engineering reviews and approves design concepts, design modifications, testing, verification strategies, and procedures. They mentor, develop, and motivate the Consumables Engineering team and ensure that the department can provide the needed skill sets and resources to support the development and sustaining of ZOLL’s consumable products.

This individual will directly manage a staff of 5-10 engineers, technicians, and support staff.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide project leadership for a team of experienced engineers creating and sustaining electrodes and consumables for medical device applications.

  • Lead best-in-class development practices and rigorous, holistic product design in coordination with internal and external partners.

  • Review and approve design concepts, design modifications, testing, verification strategies, and procedures.

  • Facilitate communication among R&D and other departments.

  • Oversee and contribute to the project life cycle of all product development engineering activities until successfully released in conformance with ZOLL’s established policies and objectives.

  • Manage the quality of the R&D deliverables across projects.

  • Support management activity in preparation of schedule, budget, and project reporting.

  • Support sustaining engineering projects, including response to customer complaints, changes in compliance requirements, and feature extensions, component obsolescence, manufacturing and manufacturing test issues.

  • Mentor, develop, and motivate the engineering team and ensure the department can provide the needed skill sets and resources to support the development and sustaining of ZOLL’s products within resuscitation and acute critical care.

  • Deliver yearly skills assessment for staff.

  • Contribute to yearly training plans and execution of such for staff.

  • Support and implement tools and processes for standardization and evolution of development practices.

  • Establish and manage engineering and development infrastructure to drive engineering quality and support product development programs.

  • Manage expenditures and assist with budget tracking.

  • Exercise appropriate judgement and good decision making with regard to both personnel and workflow management decisions.

  • Be responsible for tactical planning and matching of resources to assignments.

  • Some travel, 15 to 25%, will be required. This entails interacting with other corporate offices, customers, vendors, and test facilities

Skill Requirements:

  • Evidence of progressive advancements in R&D and/or Sustaining Engineering

  • Proficiency with SolidWorks including Design, Drawing, and PDM.

  • Working knowledge of drawing creation per ASME Y 14.5 2009.

  • Demonstrated experience in working in a development capacity as a matrixed, cross disciplinary partner.

  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and manage projects potentially impacted by change.

  • Ability to work with minimal oversight, i.e. “self-motivated.”

  • A demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement of job-related skills.

Required/ Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in the field of electrical, mechanical, or biomedical engineering (MS preferred)

  • 3 years in technical leadership and people management.

  • Experience in disposable medical devices required.

  • 10 years in development of disposable medical devices preferred.

  • Proven track record of consumable product development and launch in a regulated environment, with experience in full product development lifecycle from conception to inception.

  • Prior experience managing/leading engineering teams strongly preferred.
