The employee working as an apprentice in the Toolroom is engaged in a long-term process to become a skilled trade worker; the apprentice works under the supervision of master craftsmen. The apprentice has solid mathematical and analytical reasoning skills, mechanical aptitude, and a strong interest to learn and master the trade.

Roles and Responsibilities in a Learning/Apprenticeship Capacity

• Develops skill to perform the following tasks independently and/or under the supervision of master craftsmen:
• Machines parts to specifications, using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and EDM machines.
• Set-ups and operates basic machine tools as well as advanced tools to perform precision machining operations.
• Using precision instruments, measures, examines, and tests completed units to check for defects and ensure conformance to specifications.
• Sets controls to regulate machining; enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
• Utilizes knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
• Calculates dimensions and tolerances using mathematics and instruments.
• Aligns and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, or materials onto machines.
• Selects the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.

Physical Demands
This job requires extreme concentration and attention. Without deliberate focus, the worker could sustain a serious injury or cause another employee to be injured. Safety training is on-going and persistent. Safety is paramount for this job.
Independently move steel blocks weighing up to 2000 lbs. using chain hoists.
Drive forklift in a manufacturing environment where heavy steel molds are stored in exposed, tall, vertical racks.
Perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and whole body movement: such as lifting up to 45 lbs., balancing, stooping, and handling of materials.
Talk; hear; see. Specific vision abilities required by this job include normal field of vision, close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and color recognition.
Make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
Walk and stand a minimum of 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week on concrete floors.
Wears steel-toed safety shoes and other personal protective equipment as required such as ear plugs and gloves.

This position requires overtime and weekend work; actual work hours may vary from 40 to 55 hours per week.

Pay: $30.00 - $35.00 per hour
