The ProgramAs a Tier II child development center, YWCA Mel Wolf is much more than a daycare. Mel Wolf is dedicated to child development, education, and emotional growth. Instructors engage children with high-quality and age-appropriate activities; multiple educational toys and equipment; a stimulating curriculum custom-tailored to each child’s development and interests; plus nutritious meals and snacks. Services are provided to infants, toddlers, preschool, and school-age children year-round The YWCA Mel Wolf Child Development Center, which is available to anyone regardless of their socio-economic status, offers childcare and education that’s secure, diverse, and stimulating. Studies show that early childhood development is one of the best economic development tools for states to develop a stronger workforce, lower crime rates, and advance educational opportunities. The services offered at YWCA Mel Wolf are particularly empowering to working mothers, many of whom are the family’s single source of income.
The PositionThe Assistant Teacher, under the direction of the Lead Teacher. The assistant teacher will direct activities in a childcare room and assist in developing learning programs and activities appropriate for the social needs of each child, considering the particular strengths and weaknesses that each child may possess.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalency.
  • One (1) year of relevant work experience.
  • Possess a WV Training Certification/ACDS.
Additional Requisites
  • Knowledge and ability to meet State child care licensing standards and requirements.
  • Visual acuity to permit routine assessment of children, observation of child and staff conduct, and to allow development and use of materials to create a “print rich” environment that includes daily age-appropriate reading and literature activities.
  • Auditory acuity is sufficient to monitor classroom activity and to engage in meaningful communication with children, parents, and staff.
  • Expressive communication skills to enable clear guidance to children and staff during routine and emergent situations.
  • Workaround moderate noise, stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift or carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Must meet health requirements established by State licensing standards.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
Responsibilities
  • Carry out a curriculum developed by the Lead Teacher emphasizing age-appropriate activities to help children learn and develop
  • Maintain a schedule and structure in the room that promotes positive interactions with children, guides and directs their behavior, and reduces or eliminates the need for reactive behavior intervention
  • Provide behavior intervention, as needed, without recourse to physical or emotional punishment
  • Carry out appropriate activities on a routine basis
  • Seek appropriate direction or assistance for non-routine or emergencies
  • Develop positive relationships with parents and encourage them to be involved in their child’s care
  • Follow guidance from the Lead Teacher to ensure that State childcare licensing standards are met at all times, including standards related to health and safety
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions as assigned
  • Provide duties assigned by the Lead Teacher, which may include, but not be limited to:
    • Assisting parents with signing each child in and ensuring that it is done correctly
    • Keeping Information Sheets current and in good order
    • Carrying out new policies
    • Maintaining first aid kits and updating them as needed
    • Assisting parents to ensure that medication request forms are completed correctly.
    • Maintaining appropriate records for each child
    • Ensuring that the room, toys, and equipment are clean and in working order.
    • Inspecting equipment regularly for safety purposes and making requests for repairs to equipment promptly
    • Carrying out health and safety routines at all times
  • Other duties as assigned

Compensation: $10.00 to $12.50 hourly
