Job Description
Purpose Statement
The job of Athletic Trainer is done for the purpose/s of preventing and treating athletic injuries. The Athletic Trainer is directly involved in the phases of health care for athletes including injury prevention, injury evaluation, immediate first aid, and rehabilitation.
Essential Functions
  • Assists coaches and officials during athletic events for the purpose of responding to equipment and/or medical needs of student athletes.
  • Consults with physicians and other medical personnel (e.g. referrals, physical exams, fitting of braces, etc.) for the purpose of developing course of treatment for injured students/athletes.
  • Supervises student trainers and paid student workers for the purpose of providing direction and or monitoring activities.
  • Schedules medical staff and emergency medical equipment for the purpose of ensuring adequate coverage for scheduled athletic events.
  • Develops various programs in cooperation with coaches (e.g. conditioning, injury prevention, etc.) for the purpose of preventing injury to students.
  • Evaluates facility and playing field for potential hazards, inadequate equipment, etc., for the purpose of implementing modifications or recommendations that would reduce the risk of injuries.
  • Annually reviews, and revises as needed, all Emergency Action Plans for each athletic venue on campus. Educate, review, and practice these EAPs with coaches and all other responsible parties on a seasonal basis.
  • Orients student athletes, parents, coaches, other constituents, regarding potential health risks of participation in athletics for the purpose of implementing preventive strategies.
  • Administers, under physician direction, first aid and assistance to student athletes for the purpose of providing appropriate care.
  • Refers athletes to and consults with physicians and other medical personnel when necessary, for the purpose of developing a proper course of treatment for injured student-athletes.
  • Responds to emergency situations during practice and/or athletic contests for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
  • Maintains student treatment and health records for the purpose of communicating and/or documenting information in accordance with established policies, regulations, and procedures.
  • Processes various documents relating to injuries (e.g. accident/injury reports, records of treatment, etc.) for the purpose of communicating and documenting information in accordance with established policies, regulations, and procedures.
  • Assists other personnel as directed by administrator for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
Other Functions
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: Skills and knowledge required by the National Athletic Trainers Association and Arizona Board of Athletic Training.

Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 30% walking, and 50% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Continuing Educ./Training: As specified for recertification
Certificates and Licenses: Current NATABOC Certification and Arizona Athletic Training License
