Family Literacy Specialist
Purpose Statement
The job of Family Literacy Specialist is done for the purpose/s of performing duties of a specialized nature and serving families as a lead in our Family Literacy Learning Program. To coordinate and monitor the involvement of parents in the education of their children; to serve as a liaison between parents, school and community to promote a welcoming environment; and to provide services to parents and school personnel to faciliate increased student performance.
This job reports to PrincipalEssential Functions
  • Serves as a liaison between school personnel, parents/guardians, the community and the National Center for Families Learning Grant department.
  • Recruits and supports families as they become involved with their child’s goals.
  • Assists the Parent Liaison and families with referrals for appropriate resources.
  • Collaborates with site teachers and Parent Liaison to provide parent education and training relevant to student learning (i.e., Math and Reading Literacy Nights, Family Curriculum Evening, etc.)
  • Coordinate and facilitate parent and adult education trainings and classes.
  • Provide adult education instruction and parent education instruction on-site.
  • Foster an awareness of national, state and local organizations working in the area of parental involvement and share their resources with school community and or visitors; connect parents to leadership and volunteer opportunities.
  • Serve as a member of the school Family Engagement Lighthouse Action Team and help to develop school goals, implementation of the plan and analyze results.
  • Collaborate and attend district/NCFL meetings and trainings pertaining to parent involvement.
  • Compile information for the school website regarding parent involvement and maintain an information area at the school site, with resources and activities affecting parental involvement.
  • Use data to provide programs and activities to address the needs of parents and the school.
  • Regular and on-time attendance is required.
  • Confidentially maintain a variety of records, which may include: parent information, attendance records, evaluation reports, data logs, supply inventory, ordering and other program information.
  • Prepare reports to submit to Administration and/or grant personnel, which may include program hours, parent information, attendance records, orders, and other paperwork related to the program.
  • Continue professional growth by reading literature and stay current with family engagement topics.
Other Functions
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: concepts of grammar and punctuation; stages of child development; community resources available to students; federal and state education programs.
ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather and/or collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups in both English and Spanish; maintaining confidentiality; working as part of a team; and working with detailed information.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to impact the organization’s services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 30% sitting, 50% walking, and 20% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and in a clean atmosphere.
Experience Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desired.
