YSS is Hiring an Overnight Emergency Bed Advocate - PT - DSM Near Des Moines, IA

We are seeking a dedicated Part-Time, Overnight Emergency Bed Advocate (Advocate) to join our Youth Opportunity Center Emergency team! The Advocate provides supervision, support, and establish rapport with young adults aged 18-24 experiencing homelessness. As an Advocate, you will ensure the safety and well-being of participants, while assisting them in meeting their basic needs and working towards stability.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct intakes with new youth and orient them to the center.
  • Provide program information to potential clients, referral sources, and other groups.
  • Enforce program rules and guidelines consistently, firmly, and fairly.
  • Oversee client activities including chores, curfew, bedtime, wake-up, and personal hygiene.
  • Assist clients in meeting basic needs such as food, clothing, bedding, and personal care products.
  • Conduct nightly checks for potential weapons or illegal substances and ensure facility security.
  • Alert on-call staff or Program Coordinator of major incidents or emergencies.
  • Provide ongoing risk assessment, safety planning, crisis intervention, and mediation when required.
  • Coordinate referrals to appropriate agencies for services including counseling and state or federal benefits.
  • Assist in implementing individualized case plans and monitor participant progress.
  • Ensure safety, cleanliness, and appearance of the facility.
  • Conduct group activities and center meetings to resolve conflicts.
  • Complete necessary documentation including case notes, shift reports, and incident reports.
  • Attend team meetings, staff meetings, and in-service trainings as required.
  • Attend monthly supervisory meetings with the Program Coordinator.

MUST HAVES - Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma/equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience in the in the human services field.
  • At least 21 years old with a valid driver's license to meet requirements to drive agency vehicles.
SHOULD HAVES - Preferred Qualifications
  • Has experience working with youth experiencing homeless or who are precariously housed.
  • Has experience working with diverse populations, including racial, ethnic, gender, sexual orientation and socio-economic status.
  • Understands and can put into practice crisis intervention techniques such as Trauma Informed Care; Harm Reduction; and Positive Youth Development.
  • Is client focused and able to collaborate, communicate, and coordinate with others.
  • Uses critical thinking skills to problems solve.

YSS’s Hiring Process

1. Application - All applicants are required to complete an online application. The application is considered complete when all questions have been answered, all required documents (resume, waivers) have been submitted, and the application has been electronically signed.
2. Assessment – As they are received, applications are reviewed for education, experience, and licensure (if required). If the required qualifications are not met, the application will likely be declined.
3. Interview – Depending on the number of applications received, we may choose to do initial phone interviews. Otherwise, we will move directly to in-person or Zoom interviews.
4. References – Applicants moving forward after their interview are asked to submit three references, which YSS then contacts.
5. Pre-employment Screening – Applicants are required to submit background check waiver forms at the time they apply. YSS conducts a Single Contact Repository (SING) background check on all final candidates. All offers of employment at YSS are contingent upon clear results of the SING. The SING provides authorized organizations online access to Iowa Criminal History and Sex Offender Registry information held by the Department of Public Safety/Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), Department of Human Services’ (DHS) Central Abuse Registry for Child Abuse (CA) and Dependent Adult Abuse (DAA), as well as Professional License information. YSS also requires a clean driving record for positions that provide transport. Verification will be done through the records of the state that issued the individual’s current license.
6. Offer – Applicants selected for hire will receive a formal offer of employment via email with instructions of how to reply.
7. New Hire Meeting - The offer email will provide details on how to set up this meeting. You must schedule and attend this meeting before you can begin working or getting paid.
