Youth Represent Inc is Hiring a Remote SOCIAL WORKER

Position Description:
Social Worker Position (Full-Time)
Youth Represent is seeking a dynamic and dedicated social worker to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to continue growing the mental health services our holistic legal services organization provides. After bringing on our first social worker in 2022, we were able to enhance and deepen the support we provided to our clients by including an interdisciplinary approach to our practice. We are eager to further expand on our goal of providing trauma-informed social work support to our clients as they navigate the complexities of poverty, trauma, and system involvement.

Organization
Youth Represent is dedicated to improving the lives of young people aged 16-26 affected by the criminal legal system through a community-lawyering model that combines direct legal representation, social work support, systemic litigation, youth leadership development, and advocacy for systematic reform. With a current staff of 14, we partner with more than 20 community organizations across New York to offer on-site legal services to youth participants, teach youth strategies to safely and effectively exercise their legal rights, and advance their policy agenda. We are committed to supporting and working alongside those who are disproportionately impacted by the criminal legal system, specifically Black youth, youth of color, immigrants, LGBTQ and GNC youth. Our primary legal practice areas include: employment, criminal defense, education, criminal record law, name change and gender marker change support, and housing.
Overview of the Position
Reporting to the Director of Community Legal Services, the Social Worker will be an integral member of our legal team. The position requires a proven commitment to advancing equity and anti-racism. The ideal candidate will have working knowledge of New York Citys systems and programs, including the criminal legal system, reentry services, public benefits, ACS, and shelter systems.

The Person Who Will Best Succeed In This Role:
  • Has experience working directly with system impacted Black, Latin, and other People of Color (BIPOC) youth works collaboratively with youth as experts of their own lives and possess an intersectional lens centering gender, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, and class.
  • Utilizes a youth-centered approach Capable of building meaningful relationships and establishing trust with young people through engagement and interaction during new client meetings, legal workshops, trainings, and other community lawyering methods. Supports the youth to ensure that their voice is heard.
  • Has a demonstrated commitment to Diversity Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Applies an introspective DEI lens when considering ones actions and biases when advocating and working with BIPOC individuals, including clients, colleagues, and other stakeholders.
  • Seeks an opportunity to grow and to lead since our social work practice at Youth Represent is new and growing, we will rely on your expertise to support its continued development and youth-focused programming.
  • Possesses deep knowledge of the social service and resource landscape of NYC were looking for someone to hit the ground running and strengthen our referral network across the 5 boroughs.
  • Independent and self-reliant our clients come to us with a multitude of needs and this position requires someone who can independently and critically assess a young persons unique needs, develop an interdisciplinary action plan with legal team members, and set clear expectations and proper boundaries with little supervision.

Responsibilities:
  • Support the continued development and structuring of the social work practice in coordination with the current social worker and the Director of Community Legal Services & Social Worker Supervising Consultant.
  • Support in-court advocacy efforts through mitigation letters, pre-pleading investigations (PPIs), oral advocacy, and court appearances for clients with pending criminal court cases.
  • Support clients in overcoming legal barriers to employment.
  • Navigating and preparing clients alongside other legal team members for administrative hearings, such as school suspension and security guard license hearings.
  • Balance an ever-changing case load of short and long-term clients with a wide range of unique needs and barriers, and support each client in navigating the harm caused by the criminal legal system.
  • Strategize, case conference, and coordinate action plans with colleagues to secure positive legal outcomes.
  • Provide legal case-management services to clients to support them in navigating court mandates and barriers to re-entry.
  • Advocate, liaise, and support clients in applying and securing government benefits and public assistance such as SNAP, SSI, SSDI, Medicaid, and other state benefits.
  • Cultivate relationships with community programs and social service providers to facilitate referrals.
  • Accompany clients to various appointments related to their legal case or when providing referral support
  • - includes city agencies such as the Department of Probation, the New York City Housing Authority, Social Security Administrative Office, the Office of Child Support Services, etc.
  • Develop and support the creation of innovative programs/initiatives to increase youth participation, development and engagement in our community work.
  • Develop and conduct trainings for Youth Represent staff on relevant topics to support and improve youth-centered client interactions and outcomes.
  • Maintain records of client work in Salesforce, our client management system.
  • Other duties as needed.
    Candidate Profile
    The ideal candidate will be a passionate, self-directed Social Worker who can work independently as well as collaboratively, operates with integrity and transparency, and is committed to the young people of color that Youth Represent serves. The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in social work, have great interpersonal skills and possess a deep understanding of how the criminal legal system disproportionately and intentionally harms young people of color.
    Qualifications
    • M.S.W. from an accredited School of Social Work (LMSW preferred).
    • 2-5 years of relevant social work experience.
    • Experience with case management.
    • Experience assisting system-involved youth, low-income communities of color, LGBTQ and GNC youth and clients, who are experiencing challenges related to trauma, poverty, disability, and other marginalizing factors.
    • Familiarity with New York City & State institutions and social service systems.
    • Experience providing client centered advocacy in the areas of public benefits, housing, civil and/or criminal legal systems, child welfare, education, and healthcare.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Strong self-direction skills and ability to work independently.
    • A commitment to criminal justice and/or reentry justice work.
    • Ability to organize and prioritize efficiently.
    • Commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration.
    • A personal approach that values and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstance.
    • Proficiency in a second-language is a plus.
    • Our Manhattan office operates on a hybrid schedule, 3 days in-person and 2 days remote.

    Salary Range & Benefits Package:
    • Salary for this position is $62,883 -$69,367, commensurate with experience
    • We offer a comprehensive benefits plan, covering the full premium for our medical plan. Other benefits include vision and dental coverage, disability, short- and long-term disability, life insurance, flexible spending account options, commuter benefits, a 401(k) plan, and a generous parental leave policy. We also offer four weeks of paid vacation and nine holidays, and we close the office the week between Christmas and New Years.

    This position is a member of the Association of Legal Aid Attorneys-UAW Local 2325.
