Do you have a passion to work with and help new immigrants and refugees? The YMCA New American Welcome Center in York is looking for an experienced ESL teacher to teach open-entry, multi-level adult ESL classes.

 Our goal is to be available and welcoming to newcomers in the very first weeks and months of arriving in York. Along with being a place to study English, the open-entry classes provide a place of information, safety, and inclusion in the community for newcomers who would otherwise be on their own in the new environment. Our approach is centered around being responsive, supportive, and helpful to our students.

The adult ESL classes are based in the community. One class meets 3 times per week for 1.5 hours each class, and the other class meets twice a week for 1.5 hours. The job provides 30 minutes of paid prep time per class. Textbooks, supplies, access to a copier, and support in planning are provided.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Plans and teaches ESL classes for NAWC participants; prepares lessons and classroom materials for each class. Maintains records as required (e.g., attendance, progress reports)
2. Maintains a consistent, timely schedule of all assigned classes
3. Conveys information on ESL classes and other NAWC services, and as appropriate, refers program participants and families to other Y programs
4. Maintains tidiness and organization of classroom spaces. Reports supply needs and damaged equipment
5. Trains and supervises classroom volunteers as needed
6. Develops and maintains positive relationships with volunteers, program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA
7. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Degree in TESL, Linguistics, Bilingual Education preferred, or other related field
• Three years’ experience in community based ESL preferred, or experience in a school/teaching environment
• Willingness and ability to provide meaningful instruction and learning activities in an open-entry, walk-in classroom
