York County SPCA is Hiring a Canine Kennel Technician - Full Time Near York, PA

The York County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is a charitable organization dedicated to providing long-term human and animal services to residents of York County through programs that find permanent, loving homes for displaced and stray animals, help control animal population growth, investigate and prosecute cruelty offenders and educate the general public about animal wellness and safety.

Position Overview:

The Kennel Technician plays a critical role in caring for the canine residents at the York County SPCA. In addition to providing enrichment activities for the dogs, the Kennel Tech is responsible for the general care and maintenance of both large and small dogs including feeding, cleaning, walking, disinfecting, grooming, vaccinating, and medicating shelter animals. Kennel Techs are also responsible for doing laundry and washing dishes for the animals. Kennel Techs become well acquainted with shelter animals and provide detailed animal descriptions to help facilitate adoptions.

We are looking for for 1 Full Time Kennel Technician to work the following schedule: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, & Friday 6am - 4:30pm 

Essential Functions:

  • Performs basic animal husbandry tasks such as cage cleaning, feeding, walking, and other animal care activities for shelter dogs.
  • Conducts bathing and medication administration.
  • Cleans, sanitizes, organizes, and restocks the facility.
  • Responsible for laundry, dishes, and assisting with donation intake.
  • Provides quality care to shelter dogs.
  • Supports the mental welfare of the shelter dogs by providing enrichment both inside and outside of the kennel.
  • Engages dog natural instincts through play and bonding.
  • Supports dog adoptions by assisting with dog meets.
  • Provides proper exercise and outdoor time to the dogs through a trail walk or interactive play in the outside yards.
  • Assists volunteers in removing dogs from their primary enclosure.
  • Works with the Kennel Manager to take animal photographs and provide individualized animal descriptions to help promote adoptions.
  • Performs essential animal record keeping functions in our shelter database - Shelterluv
  • Observes and reports medical and behavioral issues to the Kennel Manager

Education and Experience:

Required:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required

Preferred:

  • 1-2 Years of experience handling animals

Skills and Abilities:

  • Possesses a strong passion for the York County SPCA’s mission.
  • Effective written and verbal communication with customers, volunteers, and staff.
  • Demonstrated track record with multitasking with positive results.
  • Has excellent organization skills and is detail-oriented; adapts to changes in the workplace.
  • Works efficiently without supervision and uses talents to creatively further the mission of the York County SPCA.
  • Has strong oral and written communication skills and a thorough understanding of the York County SPCA’s programs and services.

Working Conditions and Expectation:

  • 40 hour workweek
  • Some evening, weekend and holiday shifts may be required
  • Some fundraising and event attendance may be required
  • Comfortable with regular exposure to animal odors, diseases, possible contagious conditions, bites, scratches, animal waste, and moderate noise levels.

Salary and Benefits

  • Paid biweekly, direct deposit available
  • York County SPCA employee health care costs are thirty dollars ($30.00) per pay period. Vision and dental benefits are included.
  • The York County SPCA offers retirement benefits with a dollar-for-dollar match up to a maximum of three percent (3%) of your salary per year. The organization offers a SIMPLE IRA.
  • 176 hours of Paid Time Off (22 eight-hour days) plus six holidays and two floating holidays.
  • Adoption discounts after 6 months of continuous employment. 

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear, stoop, bend, squat, kneel, grasp, grip, put fingers together firmly and reach above and below shoulder level and lift, push or pull 40 pounds for situations of moving and lifting materials or supplies, repetitively use hands to operate computers; flex the neck upward and downward; twist the neck and the waist.
