Statewide Program Director who oversees various volunteer and Youth & Government programs.
Job Description

The Virginia YMCA is a program-based YMCA with a focus on youth civics education to develop the next generation of civics leaders in Virginia. The Program Director (PD) works under the direction of the Virginia YMCA Chief Executive Office/Executive Director. The Program Director directly manages our programs to ensure continued growth and advancement. This includes, but is not limited to, program recruitment, program design, vendor management, volunteer development, fundraising, and various other duties. This responsibility extends to both current—Hi-Y/Youth & Government Clubs, Model Judiciary Program (MJP), Model General Assembly (MGA)—and future programs. Additionally, The Program Director will specialize in working with our program leaders and participants, both adult (advisor, volunteer) and youth (participant) as a trusted point of contact with the Virginia YMCA.

Qualifications

Primary Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience working with teenagers and educators required.
  • Must be able to speak comfortably in public settings and advocate for the Virginia YMCA and its programs.
  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to build strong relationships with Volunteers, Advisors, Students, and Staff, and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be a quick learner and should be able to work both in teams and alone.
  • Must be able to delegate, supervise, and motivate others to achieve the mission and objectives of the YMCA.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel & Outlook as well as graphic design and basic website and social media is needed.
  • Must be available to work some weekends and evenings as well as travel minimum 24 days—often overnight—per year.
  • Must be organized and have experience planning both small and large events.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience working with, or in, a YMCA.
  • Prior work with civics education and/or youth-focused programs.
  • Recruiting and managing relationships with schools.
  • Knowledge of, and connections with, Virginia’s state government.
  • Virginia MGA/Youth & Government alumni.
  • Fundraising experience.
Essential Functions
  • Recruits advisors and students for clubs and programs.
  • Maintains relationships with advisors and students at existing clubs and programs.
  • Trains new advisors about the year-round nature of the Virginia YMCA programs.
  • Coordinates Model Judiciary Program with State Coordinator from Young Lawyers Division of the Virginia Bar Association.
  • Recruits, plans, and executes additional programs throughout the state.
  • Works with vendors to plan for programs and ensure successful execution.
  • Plans and executes other events such as the MGA officer retreat, among other trainings throughout the year.
  • Develops leadership activities to utilize with teenagers.
  • Gathers data after each program to evaluate and plan for future programs.
  • Coordinates program registration, including entering registrations, reminding advisors about outstanding forms/fees, coordinating the publication of all program materials, creating master housing lists, etc.
  • Assists in fundraising efforts.
  • Maintains a friendly, positive, safe, and supportive environment for members, participants, staff, and co-workers.
  • Attends all staff meetings, board meetings, special events, and trainings as required.
  • Follows the YMCA personnel policies, practices, salary administration plan, emergency procedures, child safety procedures, and risk management procedures.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Required Certifications
  • Must have reliable transportation for short trips and be able to drive rental cars for longer trips.
