YMCA is Hiring a Childwatch Coordinator - YMCA Shades Valley Near Homewood, AL

Primary Summary:

The YMCA focus is to strengthen communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Under the supervision of the Family Life Director, the Childwatch Coordinator is responsible for group control, the safety of the children attending, and following the association lesson plan. He/She also serves as a site supervisor while the Family Life Director is off-site. He/She is a role model by exemplifying high standards and values. Delivers a quality experience to children, members and guests focused on YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervise children in drop-in childcare rooms (Childwatch and YKids), ensuring adherence to required staff-to-child ratios.

  • Helps plan, lead, and participate in all activities as scheduled.

  • Remains flexible as needs change.

  • Maintains an open line of communication with the Family Life Director, parents, and children.

  • Maintains a positive attitude and serves as a positive role model to fellow co-workers and participants.

  • Responsible for the safety and well-being of all children in the program.

  • Responsible for resolving parent, child, and staff issues during shift.

  • Engages professionally with parents/members at drop-off and pick-up.

  • Provides direction and motivation for children in the program.

  • Responsible for being proactive in all aspects of the program and keeping a watchful eye for safety concerns or opportunities to engage with children/parents.

  • Helps ensure that the youth program operates in accordance with all safety and childcare standards.

  • Attends all staff meetings and required training programs.

  • Other duties and responsibilities assigned by the supervisor.

Employees and volunteers who directly supervise children and teens will:

Adhere to policies related to boundaries with children and teens

Attend required abuse risk management training annually

Adhere to procedures for managing high-risk activities and supervising children and teens.

Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.

Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.

Additional Duties:

  • Assist the Family Life Director with staff monthly schedules.

  • Ensure delivery of monthly activities for program participants.

  • Implementing lesson plans for activities as scheduled by the Family Life Director.

  • Supervision of staff and activities in the absence of the Family Life Director.

  • Ensure cleaning checklists are completed, and cleaning supplies are stocked.

  • Assist the Family Life Director with inventory and maintaining supplies.

  • Informing the Family Life Director about any safety concerns that need to be addressed.

  • Assist the Family Life Director with other various duties.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum age of 19 years old

  • This position requires a desire to work with children.

  • The incumbent must be a positive role model for children.

  • He/She must have the ability to lead, control and inspire the children with warmth, clear instruction, a positive attitude and appropriate firmness.

  • This position requires an understanding of, and a commitment to, the total effort of the YMCA mission and the Christian principles upon which it was founded.

  • through speech and understanding of the English language.

  • Ability to walk, stand, kneel, stoop, manual dexterity and lift a maximum of 40 pounds.

  • Successful completion of background & Child Abuse & Neglect screening

  • Acquire and maintain the following certifications prior to start date via YMCA, American Red Cross, American Heart Association and American Health and Safety Institute (ASHI):

    • First Aid/CPR /AED (valid 2 years unless otherwise noted)

  • Requisite Online Training Modules (completed prior to start date and repeated annually).

Physical Demands:

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to the environment, or special accommodations made of sufficient nature for completion of assigned tasks.

  • Ability to communicate clearly
