YMCA of Upper Palmetto is Hiring an Aquatics Coordinator Near Indian, SC

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director or Branch Director and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the Aquatics Coordinator is responsible for managing the operations and programs of the Aquatics department as well as enhancing the quality and growth of the programs and retention of the participants of said programs. The aquatics coordinator will assist the Aquatics Director or Branch Director with various branch activities such as special events, and other activities that occur on various occasions. Responsibilities include but not limited to: developing member relationships, increasing program development and increasing member retention.
  • Employs non-exempt staff for service and operation within the approved budget and with approval of the Aquatics Director or Branch Director.
  • Provide training programs for personnel as ongoing career development program.
  • Review effectiveness of employed personnel annually with the Branch Director or Aquatics Director.
  • Interprets and communicates the objectives and programs of the Association to the community through public communication media and participates actively in community organizations.
  • Directs personnel of the department in the performance of their respective responsibilities.
  • Reviews and evaluates the enrollment, programs, services and operation of fitness department and communicates findings to Branch Director or Associate Branch Director.
  • Sets the schedule of staff for lifeguards, swim lesson instructors, and water aerobics instructors.
  • Conduct monthly in-service training for lifeguard staff.
  • Provide a safe and effective workout in the class format scheduled, in accordance with current accepted practices of exercise physiology.
  • Supervise and guide the participants through a workout that incorporates appropriate warm-up, cardiovascular endurance, cool down, strength and flexibility. Be aware of the various abilities of the participants and potential problems associated with poor form.
  • Provide a safe aquatic environment by keeping workout area or entrance to pool area clear of free of obstacles. All equipment that is used during class is properly returned to the appropriate area after each class.
  • Reduce risk of injury by adhering to national YMCA safety guidelines
    • Maintain correct spinal alignment and stabilization
    • Cue moves well in advance to maintain balance in water
    • Demonstrate variations or modifications to encourage participants to pace themselves, and keep movements pain free.
  • Report to supervisor any equipment that is damaged or not working.
  • Know and follow emergency procedures as situations warranty. Incident forms should be completed for any accidents/injuries that occurred during class. Reports should be submitted to your supervisor or the branch director as soon as possible.
  • Start and finish classes on time. If unable to teach a class, instructor will find a substitute to cover the classes that you are assigned.
  • Appropriate music and attire at all time. Music selections should not contain offensive language.
  • Encourage the practice of healthy lifestyles, not special diets or supplements.
  • Attend schedule staff meetings and special events.
  • Follow the YMCA mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
  • Developing member relations and member involvement.
  • Providing individualized exercise and fitness instruction based on the overall needs of the class.
  • Promoting total YMCA programming.
  • Increasing member retention.
  • Enhancing knowledge of the water aerobics/group exercise method being taught.
  • Increasing exposure of YMCA to non-member participants.
  • Participating in staff activities (meetings, staff functions).
Qualifications:
  • High School graduate or the equivalent.
  • Current CPR/AED/Blood Borne Pathogens/First Aid Certifications.
  • 2 years’ experience in the following:
    • Lifeguarding
    • Teaching swim lessons
    • Teaching water aerobics/group exercise classes
  • Must hold current certifications for lifeguarding, swim lesson instructor, and water aerobics instructor.
  • Must be willing to teach a minimum of three or more regular schedule water aerobics/group exercise classes per week.
  • Must be willing to get instructor certifications in the following:
    • Lifeguarding
    • WSI or YMCA Swim Lesson
    • Water Aerobics
  • Must be willing to become a CPO (Certified Pool Operator)
  • Must maintain all appropriate certifications and provide copies of all certifications and required CEC’s to aquatics coordinator/director or branch director each year.
  • Excellent human relations and communication skills.
  • Team player (be willing to substitute teach for other instructors).
  • Physical Requirements; carrying, seeing, hearing, speaking, running, crouching, pushing, kneeling, lifting (25lbs) and walking.
