YMCA OF THE TRIANGLE AREA is Hiring an Aquatics Director-Full Time-Durham YMCA Near Durham, NC

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, the Assistant Aquatics Director is responsible for two year round facilities’ programs and activities within the YMCA and provides leadership to staff responsible for designing and delivering those activities. They will work to strengthen relationships with members and build communities around common goals while maintaining safety in the pool, on the deck and surrounding areas. They will be responsible for managing those functions in accordance with the stated mission and policies established by the YMCA of the Triangle Area.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations. Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility.
  • Assists in the delivery of high quality aquatic programs that support member health and wellness goals plus a positive member experience.
  • Leads effort for the aquatics team to effectively engage with members.
  • Assists in monitoring daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations and conducts and ensures proper maintenance of pools. Maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
  • Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and prior to shift ending.
  • Helps to ensure compliance with YUSA and Association Program Guidelines. Conduct regular rescue ready audits as part of ongoing risk management.
  • Assists in the process of ordering of pool supplies, chemicals and maintains awareness of needs to pool operations.
  • Leads or assists with all staff meetings and in-service trainings. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
  • Prevents, prepares for, and responds to incidents in and around the pool area. Assists in maintaining accident and incident reports and records of equipment and safety inspections.
  • Recruits and hires diverse staff and volunteer teams across multiple dimensions of diversity. Responsible for onboarding and developing them for success.
  • Oversees and manages lifeguards and head lifeguards. Creates and maintains schedules of lifeguards and head-lifeguards according to program needs. Maintains an open line of communication with direct supervisor, guards and other support staff.
  • Ensures all staff are certified in department specific certifications including, YMCA Lifeguarding/Red Cross Lifeguarding, Basic Life Support, Oxygen and Basic First Aid. Maintains supplies related to trainings.
  • Coaches and evaluates part-time staff using pre-developed YMCA coaching tools.
  • Leads all swim lesson operations, including swim lesson curriculum implementation, training of swim lesson instructors, registration, and parent communication.
  • Assists in connecting Aquatic Programs and other aspects of the branch ensuring a positive and safe environment including but not limited to providing aquatic safety training to key non-aquatic staff as needed.
  • Assists in ensuring departmental compliance with all branch and association standards in programs, administration, business and operations.
  • Mobilizes members and community partners as volunteers in support of the YMCA cause through the Annual Campaign. This includes assisting in recruitment, planning, and raising money.
  • Ability to work afternoons, evenings and weekends as needed and to have a presence in the aquatic area to ensure that all staff are upholding YMCA standards.
  • Serves as part of the Leadership Engagement team to include opening or closing in order to develop and maintain relationships with members and program participants on a scheduled basis. Provides direct service as a lifeguard, swim instructor or certification instructor as needed.

    • Direct oversight of Swim Lessons
    • Direct oversight of Lifeguards

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors’ degree in a related field preferred and/or 2-3 years of related experience.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Experience in leading others, pool programming, pool maintenance, volunteer cultivation, staff development and supervision.
  • Must be professional, courteous and friendly, have a high level of initiative and be a self-starter.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, be well organized, and be able to respond appropriately in a dynamic, fluid environment.
  • Ability to determine and set priorities; as well as the capacity to respond and handle multiple tasks appropriately in a dynamic and fast-paced work environment is critical.
  • Must meet all requirements to physically perform all necessary rescue and survival skills.
  • Must have ASHI Basic Life Support, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certifications prior to start date.
  • Must maintain YUSA Lifeguarding and Lifeguard Instructor Certifications.
  • Certified Pool Operator Certification required.
  • YUSA National Swim Lesson Certification preferred.
  • Multi-lingual desired but not required.

  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
  • Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
