YMCA of Middle Tennessee is Hiring a Swim Instructor, Northwest Near Nashville, TN

Pay Range: Starts at $13.00 per hour, depending on experience


Position Summary:

Consistent with the Christian mission and vision of the YMCA of Middle TN, and in cooperation with other YMCA staff, under the direction of the Aquatics Director, the Swim Instructor is responsible for the instruction, leadership, supervision, control, and safety of all class participants. The Swim Instructor is responsible for the appearance, presentation, and working order of all equipment used for swim instruction. S/he will observe and direct all class participants, and provide feedback and encouragement to students.


Essential Functions:

  • Model the YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility

  • Ensure safe and risk free environment at all times while meeting the individual needs of the participants

  • Arrive to work on time, properly dressed (one-piece swim suit), and ready to teach with enthusiasm. You are responsible for securing an approved substitute and notifying your supervisor of your absence / schedule change if you cannot teach

  • Safety is priority! Ensure the safety of participants with proper precautions, facility set up, and by supervising and guiding students when conducting skill practice sessions

  • Prevent accidents and avoid dangerous situations; know, adhere to, and enforce all pool, slide, diving board rules, and all YMCA rules and policies among class participants; report any problems to the lifeguard on duty

  • Be focused on class participants at all times-socializing is not allowed; do not turn your back to a class and do not leave a class unattended

  • Teach classes from in the water, and actively participate with the class

  • Follow all appropriate procedures for scheduling and teaching private swim lessons

  • Prepare in advance organized Session Plans & Daily Lesson Plans to facilitate your classes; lessons should follow a logical progression, allowing for constructive teaching methods & styles; always keep a copy of up-to-date plans on site

  • Lead your class/group within the guidelines established by the YMCA of the USA’s swim lesson programs; maintain in theory (subject matters) and in practice (skill matters) the ultimate goal to develop the whole person; in spirit, mind and body

  • Provide verbal feedback to each participant consistently throughout each class; communicate regularly with each participant and/or the participant's parent(s) about the performance, progress, goals and needs of the participant

  • Be attentive, be available to greet and connect with participants and their parents before and after class

  • Complete all required records and reports, including attendance records, progress reports, and accident/incident reports; check your roster and swimmer skills sheets each class day

  • Ensure proper and timely set ups and clean ups before and after classes, and store all instructional equipment in proper locations

  • Build relationships and interact with members

  • Attend all required staff meetings and training sessions

  • Must present a professional image and possess conflict resolution skills, and demonstrate sound judgement and initiative

  • Minimum 16 years of age

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends

  • Demonstrate Intermediate swimming ability

  • Lifeguard and Swim Instructor certifications preferred


Certifications Required:

  • Before start of 1st shift: New Hire Orientation training

  • Within 30 days of hire: CPR Pro/First Aid/AED

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand; walk on uneven surfaces; sit; handle or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. The employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level is usually minimal to moderate.
