Pay Range: Starting at $115.00 Daily Rate
Position Summary:
Consistent with the Christian mission and vision of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, and in cooperation with other YMCA staff, under the direction of the Resident Camp Director, the Resident Camp Village Leader is responsible for supervising his/her cabin and village, maintaining the safety of the campers and staff, and ensuring the camp’s daily program is run efficiently through detailed supervision and objective decision making.
Essential Functions:
Model the YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility
Serve as a cabin counselor
This position requires working outside all day during the summer
Be an appropriate role model for all campers by adhering to YMCA Code of Conduct, Work Rules, and Dress Code
Exhibit good judgement, enthusiasm for the activities, initiative, and a strong awareness of safety
Following the prepared schedule, guide campers and actively participate in all activities, which may include swimming, while maintaining the health, happiness, and safety of all campers; fill free time with age appropriate activities; lead songs, games, and other activities
Know where all campers are at all times and utilize a group travel system and frequent head counts to ensure campers are always accounted for, especially during free swim time
Participate in camp family programs, opening/closing ceremonies, and other duties as assigned
Greet and communicate with parents through camper recognition or notes about camp experiences
Ensure each camper’s experience is safe and positive by using conflict resolution skills and dealing with discipline problems based on given guidelines, while keeping supervisor informed of all concerns
Know, adhere to, and enforce all YMCA rules, policies and emergency procedures
Submit reports and paperwork on time, as required
Attend staff meetings and training sessions, as required
Maintain a positive and professional working relationship with other staff and supervisors
Be alert to program safety factors and potential hazards; prevent accidents and minimize or eliminate hazardous situations; report any problems or hazards to supervisor immediately
Supervise a group of counselors for a specific age group to ensure camp procedures & policies are followed
Manage camper discipline issues, communicate with camper services, camp directors and parents
Coordinate Village-wide activities each session
Passion, enthusiasm, and commitment to the mission and cause of the YMCA. Superior supervisory skills and an enthusiastic personality with the ability to inspire and motivate staff, volunteers, members and participants to create a culture of service within our Centers. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
Excellent communication and organization skills
Must be able to work on a team and willingness to work outdoors
Ability to think in the abstract, solve problems, make decisions, instruct, evaluate, lead others
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends
Minimum 18 years of age
High school diploma or equivalent required
Experience supervising others preferred; one year of camp experience preferred
Certifications Required:
Before start of 1st shift: New Hire Orientation Certification
Within two weeks of hire or before 1st shift with children (whichever comes first): CPR/First Aid/AED; Camp Staff Training Orientation
