YMCA of Greater Springfield is Hiring a Summer Day Camp Director 2024 Near West Springfield, MA

Job Description: Summer Day Camp Director 

Position Summary:

The Camp Director is responsible for the organization, delivery, and quality of the Summer Day Camp Program. This position works independently under the general direction of the Associate Executive Director of School Age Education and is expected to determine how to accomplish tasks.

Essential Functions:

This person will play an important part in the work that we do each day. In addition to all other duties as assigned, this role will:

 Supervisory Responsibilities 

  • Direct supervision of camp staff by the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Plan, train, assign, and direct camp staff. 
  • Address complaints and resolve problems. 
  • Role model and give guidance in appropriate positive discipline.

Program Responsibilities

  • Ensure the highest quality camp program. 
  • Provide accurate organized record keeping of camp participants and curriculum. Responsible for camper connection and retention throughout the program.
  • Responsible for working within the confines of the department budget.
  • A commitment to safety that is evident throughout the Camp Program. 
  • Ensure campers’ development of the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in a safe and nurturing environment. 
  • Ensure campers’ exposure to the Search Institutes’ 40 Developmental Assets.
  • Equipment and facilities that are kept in good repair and condition. 
  • Develop innovative camp programs that include quality instruction and staffing. 
  • Develop staff that understand and deliver the YMCA mission, character development, and the member involvement model. 
  • Must be available in 10 of the 11 weeks of summer. 
  • Be available for weekly meetings and trainings mid-May, 2024

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years old at the time of hire.
  • Associate/bachelor's degree in related course work (e.g. Education, Social Work, Ecology).
  • Must have at least 4 years of experience in programming and camp operations or equivalent Y experience. 
  • Must have at least 4 years of experience in program design and implementation.
  • Must have at least 1 year of experience in managing staff.
  • Must have, or be willing to earn, and maintain CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications.
  • Ability to follow sound judgment calls in a fast-paced, participant-focused environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide organizational leadership, coaching, and personal development support.
  • Proven experience in teaching and directing diverse populations in youth enrichment programs.
  • Must be able to role-model positive behaviors.
  • Must be able to work in a high-value, and potentially high-stress, environment.
  • An ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Exhibit core YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • Exhibit excellent relationship-building skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to swim, ride a bicycle, get wet (pool and rain), traverse wooded terrain, and be exposed to outdoor summer conditions for extended periods.

Certifications:CPR, AED, and First Aid certification. 

Candidate must demonstrate a thorough understanding of relationship building, the YMCA mission, and the ability to lead a team.
