YMCA of Greater Long Beach is Hiring a Group Exercise Instructor 1 - Fairfield Near Long Beach, CA

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Under the direct supervision of the Health and Wellness Director, the Group Exercise Instructor I Coach is responsible for supporting the goals of the Health and Wellness Department. In addition, the Group Exercise Instructor I is responsible for instructing Group Exercise Classes in a safe, enjoyable and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement. It is imperative that Group Exercise Instructor I builds healthy, lasting relationships with members while encouraging and motivating members and participants to meet their health and fitness goals He/she will be responsible for managing those functions in accordance with the stated mission and policies established by the YMCA provides quality one-on-one, and/or small group orientations for all members requesting or recommend another personal trainer/wellness coach, if unable to meet member’s needs. .

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:

  • Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
  • Asks and answers questions from program participants and members to support them in achieving their goals related to health and well-being.
  • Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  • Maintains neat and orderly group exercise class equipment, supervising members to return equipment in an orderly fashion
  • Visually monitors class participants for their general condition, technique and ability to follow.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members and program participants connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • An excellent communicator and positive leader with a friendly and outgoing personality.
  • Observes and adjusts approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture.
  • Celebrates achievement of program participants related to program or personal goals, mastering of specific skills or overall health and well-being.
  • Keeps accurate class attendance records.
  • Follows payroll procedures and is accurate in recording work hours.
  • Follows all protocols for subbing requests when unable to work.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
  • Attends all staff meetings, required trainings and maintains relevant certifications required for the role.
  • Appropriately sets up and takes down classes within the allotted scheduled shift.
  • Reports any extra time worked related to scope of the position (i.e., trainings, curriculum development, set up and take down) beyond the time allocation per shift to the Healthy Lifestyles Director
  • Actively participate and support the YMCA Annual Giving Campaign.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are the minimum qualifications which an individual needs in order to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this position. Please note that the minimum qualifications may vary based upon the need and can be modified at the discretion of management.

Required certifications: CPR, First Aid, AED.

  • National Group Exercise certification (ACE, AFAA, NETA) in group fitness instruction highly recommended.
  • At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes required.
  • Certification in areas of expertise.
  • Continuing educations/renewals of certifications kept up to date and submitted to the supervisor on or before certifications expire.

 Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to interact effectively at all levels and across diverse cultures.
  • Ability to be an effective member of the Group Exercise team.

  • Works in both indoor (fitness facilities) and outdoor facilities (e.g. parks, and recreational sites).
  • Exposure to heat, cold, potentially hazardous chemicals, toxic materials,
  • Works on slippery or uneven surfaces. 
  • Noise level is usually moderate.
  • Ability to physically move around for extended periods while observing/ teaching class/instructing.
  • Ability to see and hear distress signals of participants/members.
  • Frequently required to stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee must be able to push, lift, pull and/or move up to 40 lbs.
