JOB LOCATION: Association office located in the Wellmark YMCA in downtown Des Moines and supports all the branches of the association.
HOURS/DAYS SCHEDULE: Standard work week, but will occasionally work evening or weekend hours to accommodate activities such as meetings and events.
SALARY:$85,000 - $102,000 annualized

POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Chief Administrative Offices, the Vice President of Finance serves on the CEO’s senior leadership team and provides direction and leadership for YMCA finance and business operations. This position oversees the Y’s accounting practices, the maintenance of its fiscal records, the preparation of its financial reports, ensures a system of strong internal controls, and maintains fiscal soundness. This position also provides strategies and recommendations to the senior leadership team and advises on long-term sustainability and financial planning.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Monitors monthly financial operations, prepares analysis and reports, and gives guidance to executive and operating staff. Works closely with operations staff on issues that affect financial outcome.
  • Reviews, updates, and/or develops internal control systems for the YMCA and oversees internal audits which check for compliance on a variety of regulations, policies and standards. Ensures related policies and procedures are reviewed regularly and manages compliance.
  • Develops and maintains measurement systems and reporting for financial key performance indicators and strategic plan objectives.
  • Supervises staff, including Controller, Director of Facility Operations and IT/Payroll Director, and oversees the operations of the accounting/finance, facilities, IT, payroll and other assigned departments.
  • Provides leadership and direction to assigned staff in the performance of their duties and drives work priorities to ensure the achievement of strategic and operating plan goals.
  • Oversees and certifies the annual audit and meets periodically with the outside auditors to maintain communications. Ensures current accounting standards and legal requirements are met.
  • Manages systems and processes related to contracts, vendor relationships and documentation.
  • Serves as a staff liaison for the Finance and Audit Committees of the board of directors.
  • Manages investments, under the direction of the Finance Committee, and within the risk tolerance expressed by the Board via the asset allocation policy.
  • Oversees preparation of reports to United Way, YMCA of the USA and governmental agencies. Oversees preparation of tax returns and reporting, including IRS Form 990.
  • Coordinates and manages the development of the annual operating budget, including all branch budgets. Works closely with operations staff to ensure branch budgets are well-planned, realistic, and prepared in a timely manner.
  • Monitors budget progression throughout the year and provides tools, resources and systems to assist leaders in ongoing management of this process.
  • Maintains all necessary records and accounting reports and records all transactions on a timely basis.
  • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with auditors, bankers, investment counselors, representatives, attorneys and other professional advisors.
  • Ensures accountability, professionalism.
  • Perform additional duties as required.
  • Serves and leads as a member of the Y management team and supports the overall mission, values and objectives of the YMCA.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or equivalent education/experience is required.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA) or advanced degree preferred.
  • Seven or more years of substantive experience in accounting and fiscal management; previous experience working with a non-profit organization is preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of general business matters required including budget development, financial reporting, cash management, business taxes, banking and debt financing instruments.
  • Knowledge of short and long-term budgeting and forecasting.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statement and projections.
  • Knowledge of computer systems, including experience maximizing the capabilities of financial software systems; previous experience using Blackbaud software preferred.
  • Personal computer skills, including the use of Google or Microsoft Office products.
  • Experience with investment management and asset allocation preferred.
  • Previous experience effectively managing a staff team.
  • YMCA Organizational Leader certification preferred, but not required
  • Completion of trainings and/or certifications, as required by supervisor and/or the YMCA.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This position usually works in an office, but the mission of the organization may sometimes take them to non-standard workplaces. This position works a standard work week, but additionally will occasionally work evening, weekend, and additional hours accommodate activities such as special events and representing the organization at community events. Travel is primarily local during the business day. Occasionally, out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.
