YMCA of Greater Charlotte is Hiring a Professional Visual Art Teacher: Johnston YMCA Near Charlotte, NC

Under the direction of the Program Coordinator and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte, the Professional Teaching Artist will be responsible for developing curriculum, instructing and implementing the Ballantyne Preschool of the Arts for the branch, its members, and the community.

Principle Activities:

  • Provide quality age appropriate instruction through a scaffolded arts integration approach to learning, creating a fun, engaging growth environment that meets the needs of and appropriately challenges every program participant.
  • Lead instruction in assigned classroom while working collaboratively to support the entire teaching team.
  • Lead curriculum development in professional arts concentration that incorporates arts integrated learning to enhance life skills as well as art skills.
  • With teaching team and coordinators, collaboratively develop, explore, refine, and implement arts integrated lessons utilizing dance, drama, music, and visual art.
  • Provide professional development to entire BPA teaching staff leading training on curriculum and arts integration approaches in professional arts concentration.
  • Maintain a structured open learning environment utilizing redirection and positive reinforcement to keep students actively engaged.
  • Role model through participation in activities.
  • Lead positive discussion about active living.
  • Ensure proper set up and breakdown of assigned rooms.
  • Responsible for the supervision, safety, and care of all children in the Ballantyne Arts Preschool.
  • Assist in the implementation of high-quality showcases highlighting students’ work.
  • Identify and incorporate appropriate accommodations to serve students of all abilities.
  • Turn in detailed lesson plans, newsletters, calendars and other necessary administrative work in designated format by provided deadlines.
  • Provide professional communication to families by deadline utilizing provided formats.
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings and trainings.
  • Maintain consistent and timely attendance; arrange for qualified substitutes to teach scheduled classes when absolutely necessary.
  • Complete peer observations and required professional development by provided deadlines.
  • Ensure the health and safety of each participant; assist in upholding facility maintenance and cleanliness standards.
  • Be a positive influence and advocate of the arts and the YMCA.
  • Accept the goals and objectives of the YMCA and work to achieve them.
  • Be an active participant in program analysis providing constructive and proactive feedback for program adjustments and improvements.
  • Maintain positive relationships, open communication with YMCA personnel, participants, administration and volunteers.
  • Participate in program enhancements including, but not limited to special events and festivals.
  • Assume any other duties as assigned by the YMCA administration.

Qualifications:

  • 4 year degree preferably in art related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Masters in art related field preferred.
  • 5 years practicing the specialized art form and 5 hours annually of continuing education in art related field.
  • 4 years minimum experience teaching youth ages 2-5.
  • Passion for arts integrated learning and curriculum development.
  • Experience identifying, designing and implementing training for new teachers in arts integration.
  • Experience implementing a showcase or presenting student work to an audience.
  • Skilled in classroom management utilizing positive reinforcement and redirection.
  • Present a professional image to participants and general public.
  • Strong decision making skills, versatility, initiative, and human relation skills.
  • Enthusiasm and the ability to work well with participants and develop harmonious relationships with staff, and members.
  • Strong organizational and professional communication skills.
  • Strong public relation skills.
  • Ability to assist in developing and implementing class curriculum in alignment with strategic program goals.
  • Safety certifications and all trainings and certifications in accordance with the Quality Standards within required timeframe.
