Under the supervision of the Aquatic Director and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the Lifeguard Instructor is responsible for teaching and coordinating operations of lifeguard training courses in accordance with YMCA of Greater Charlotte Quality Standards and YUSA guidelines.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide instruction to all participants of YMCA Lifeguarding courses including YASA, recertification/crossovers and full lifeguard courses.
• Ensure Association quality standards and YMCA of the USA Guidelines are met for all participants and required documentation.
• Coordinate and supervise all elements of the YMCA Lifeguard course.
• Maintain records, ensure proper pool safety, teach classes, and lead staff in-service, as necessary.
• File necessary records in accordance with YMCA of Greater Charlotte quality standards and YMCA of the USA Guidelines.
• Communicate and coordinate with YMCA staff about scheduling classroom space and securing required tools to effectively teach LG course.
• Clearly and effectively communicate with all participants about curriculum and schedule of course.
• Establish strong relationships/rapport with all class participants.
• Provide high quality instruction for students as shown through class success rate and evaluation of new Lifeguards.

EDUCATION & SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

• High school diploma, or equivalent
• 1-3 years related experience in lifeguarding or aquatics
• Minimum 18 years of age
• YMCA Lifeguard Certification or American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (American Red Cross Lifeguards must successfully complete a crossover course to YMCA Lifeguard within 60 days of employment and must maintain YMCA certification).
• Must complete YMCA Lifeguard Instructor Certification (or American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructors must successfully complete a crossover to YMCA Lifeguard Instructor) within 60 days of employment.
• Current status in the following certifications, to be renewed annually: Professional Level CPR, First Aid, Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and Oxygen Administration.
• Must complete the following trainings before working first shift and are to be renewed annually: Blood Borne Pathogens and Child Abuse Prevention.
• Must successfully administer at least one full Lifeguard course under the direct supervision of an Aquatics Director/Coordinator or an experienced instructor before leading a class independently.
• Must demonstrate the ability to teach Lifeguard curriculum and the development of basic decision making skills.
• Must be able to teach, lead others and effectively communicate with participants and their parents 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to work irregular hours.
• Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
• Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
• Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.
• Must be able to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
• Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
• Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
• Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
• Ability to view/enter data for long periods of time.
• Ability to work irregular work hours, including evenings and weekends on occasion.
• Fluent in English, written and verbal communication.
