We are looking for Activity Specialists who can work in our programs for the 2023-2024 School Year. Programming begins September 10th, with staff training planned for the week of September 3rd.POSITION OVERVIEW:The Chorus Specialist will lead our Shirim! Activity at Be Me: After School Program at the Y, an inclusive chorus elective with the goal of teaching children about musical traditions from around the world as well as how choral music works. Be Me is the Y's in-house Jewish after school program for Kinder to 5th-grade students. At Be Me, we are committed to instilling universal values such as inclusion, loving-kindness, gratitude, and more. Staff members are central to carrying out this vision by supporting, running, and sometimes even creating programs that are in line with our educational goals and values, and by providing positive and enthusiastic energy every day.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Develop scope and sequence for chorus curricula, and write lesson plans with modifications based on age and interests of the students to be submitted to the Associate Director for review and approval.
  • Facilitate chorus programming with participants on topics including (but not limited to) how voices are grouped by vocal range, how songs are arranged using those ranges, lyrics to new songs, performance techniques, etc.
  • Foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all participants.
  • Maintain a safe and clean classroom environment.
  • Collaborate with other specialists and group leaders.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of program-wide special events, including two culminating performances at our mid-year and year-end showcases.
  • Complete set-up and clean-up duties for the overall program as assigned.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with all staff, and work closely with group leaders to ensure successful lessons and activities.
  • Perform other program or agency-related duties or special projects as directed by the Director of Elementary Afterschool Programs.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • A degree in music education or several years of experience teaching music to children.
  • Experience implementing inclusive choral programming with school-aged children.
  • Knowledge of appropriate music and activities for the age group.
  • Skill with classroom management.
  • Experience developing lesson plans.
  • Excel at working collaboratively with others.
  • Sensitivity and commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Status: Part-time.
Schedule: 2 days/week on Monday to Thursday.
Hours: 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM.
Rate of Pay: $31 per hour.
