POSITION: Tlingit Language Teacher

LOCATION: Mallott Avenue Building

REPORTS TO: Office Manager

WAGE RANGE: DOE

EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Part-time, temporary

FUNDING SOURCE: Grant Funded

POSITION SUMMARY

The Yakutat Tlingit Tribe is seeking a Lingít language teacher to plan and host adult Beginning Lingít courses in the evenings for the community of Yakutat, two (2) evenings per week from for 2024-2025 (flexible during subsistence season).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

• Develop lesson plans for approval by supervisor
• Utilize physical and digital materials for course planning
• Plan language projects for students to work on
• Track attendance of participants for grant reporting purposes
• Evaluate learner progress in speaking and comprehension
• Oversee communications from the Administrative team, including drafting, reviewing, and distributing communications and news in a timely and efficient manner.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Intermediate to advance comprehension and speaking skills in the Lingít language
• Experience in Lingít language, culture, and ceremonies preferred
• Experience with MS Office Suite
• Time-management abilities
• An analytical mind with problem-solving skills

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, requiring use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Recent protocols have been added to address COVID-19; all employees are informed of most current health requirements to keep employees and the community as safe as possible.

The work is mostly sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. The employee must be able to read, write, speak, and hear.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Prior experience in learning and speaking Lingít
• Previous experience in Tlingit culture and ceremony
• Valid Driver’s License.
• Must successfully pass a criminal and background check.
