Battery Cell Modelling Engineer

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented Battery Cell Modelling Engineer to join our fast-growing team. You will develop robust battery models to predict cell behaviour including; rate performance, life degradation, calendar aging, electrochemical and thermal response, and all safety-related behaviour.

In this role you’ll get to:

• Develop Multiphysics-based and data-driven models of lithium-ion batteries under a variety of operating conditions based on electrochemistry knowledge and test data
• Develop robust battery models to predict cell behaviour including rate performance, life degradation, calendar aging, electrochemical and thermal response, and all safety-related behaviour.
• Formulate and execute designs of lab and simulation experiments to acquire sufficient real and synthetic data, respectively, to train, validate, and test various battery models.
• Work with company data science experts to facilitate the development of battery estimation algorithms and models regarding SOC, SOH, impedance, and performance limitation under given operating conditions.
• Work with cross-functional teams to develop, implement, test, and maintain battery models.
• Work with various hardware teams to integrate physics- and data-based battery models into full system (e.g., BMS, vehicle drive train, etc.) simulation environments.
• Review academic papers and provide insight summaries for team members.
• Deliver documents related to model and algorithm development.
• Work with intellectual property team to patent your inventions.

To excel you will need:

• Fundamental knowledge of lithium-ion cell electro-chemistries and mechanisms
• Experience in creating Multiphysics-based models of electrochemical/thermal/mechanical systems, with an emphasis on lithium-ion batteries.
• Proficient in using Multiphysics software (e.g., ANSYS, COMSOL, etc.)
• Good level of data analytics skills
• A basic knowledge of Data Science and Machine Learning
• Proficient in one of the modern data analytics programming languages (e.g., Python, R, Matlab, etc)
• PhD in Physics, Material Science or other relevant field
• Experienced in creating data-based models of electrochemical/thermal/mechanical systems
• Familiar with battery testing equipment and test protocol
• Coursework in Battery controls and dynamics, electrochemical modelling, linear systems, optimization
• Experience with MATLAB or Python for simulating dynamic models
• Self-motivated and dedicated with proven creative and critical thinking capabilities
• Excellent communication skills and team-oriented attitude
