WSSC Water is Hiring an Environmental Laboratory Analyst I Near Silver Spring, MD

The Laboratory Analyst I performs a series of general duties involving multiple step processes, beginning with the receipt of samples and concluding with the entry and approval of results of a series of routine chemical, physical, and microbiological analyses into the appropriate database.
Essential Functions
  • Performs a variety of chemical, physical, and microbiological analyses on aqueous and non-aqueous samples including, but not limited to: color, odor, total hardness, conductivity, turbidity, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, solids, alkalinity, fluoride, chlorine, plate counts, and coliform densities
  • Retrieves samples for testing from a variety of sources and locations
  • Produces acceptable data according to Federal and State regulations (Clean Water and Safe Drinking Water Acts) and Laboratory quality control requirements
  • Maintains chain of custody throughout the analytical process
  • Utilizes specific instrumentation or computer software to complete analysis
  • Utilizes basic instrumentation such as pH, Conductivity, and Turbidity meters
  • Reviews, approves, and enters all resulting data into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and all other appropriate databases
  • Prepares necessary standards, reagents, and media for chemical, physical, and microbiological analyses following standard operating procedures and quality control requirements
  • Prepares samples for subsequent analysis, including filtration, autoclaving, digestion, and extraction following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Successfully analyzes quarterly and annual Proficiency Testing samples for assigned analyses
  • Maintains, cleans, and prepares glassware and other laboratory appliances for use in various analytical procedures
  • Maintains analytical, quality control, and maintenance records according to Laboratory QA Manual and SOPs
  • Establishes daily routine necessary to meet work deadlines
  • Assists in writing and updating laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Assists Laboratory Analyst II when workloads demand
  • Assists Sr. Chemist/Microbiologist and Chemist/Microbiologists with sample preparation
  • Assists Sr. Chemist/Microbiologist with research and development of new methodologies
  • Drives a vehicle to conduct WSSC Water business
Other Functions
  • Aids laboratory personnel in keeping the laboratory area safe, neat, and clean
  • Maintains sample storage areas including rotating storage areas and final disposal of
    samples
  • Assists in updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Cross-trains other personnel as needed
  • Participates in Stand-by and Call Back Program
  • Performs related duties as assigned
Work Environment And Physical Demands
  • This position may require extended periods of standing, sitting and/or driving, exposure to physical elements, and on occasion the ability to move into and out of unusual spaces to collect samples
  • Some repetitive movements and repetitive lifting of minimal weight, as well as occasional lifting of weights up to 100 lbs., may also be required
  • Manual dexterity and precision are also required in the use of laboratory equipment and tools, and the completion of the analysis process
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • General knowledge of principles, terminology, practices, techniques, and instrumentation for
    physical, chemical, and microbiological analyses
  • Working knowledge of theories and practices in the fields of chemistry, microbiology, or
    biochemistry
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, methods, and techniques of sample collection and
    preparation per State and Federal guidelines
  • Knowledge of good laboratory practices (GLP) and OSHA safe work requirements and
    practices
  • Ability to gain knowledge of Safety Data Sheets, Laboratory safety procedures, and
    Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Knowledge of SOPs, Quality Assurance Manual, Quality Control Protocols, EPA Approved Methods, Safety Manual, all other applicable regulations and guidelines, and all WSSC Water emergency procedures upon completion of internal Laboratory Division (LD) and QA/QC orientation
  • Ability to properly prepare and maintain records of all reagents and standards per standard
    operating procedures and quality control requirements
  • Ability to properly utilize basic laboratory instruments, devices, equipment, and tools used in physical, chemical, and microbiological analysis, including the use of the computer and all related computer software
  • Ability to distinguish colors and odors associated with analytical testing
  • Manual dexterity and precision are required in the use of laboratory equipment and tools
  • Ability to effectively prioritize work and manage time to meet tight deadlines and continual rush orders
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to interact with internal and external customers effectively and professionally
  • Ability to deliver superior customer service
Minimum Education, Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, or Environmental Sciences
  • 2 years of environmental laboratory experience
OR
  • Associate’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, or Environmental Sciences
  • 3 years of environmental laboratory experience
