This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Plant Engineer for our Birmingham, AL office. The role is to provide engineering support for operations at an Ash Thickening Plant (ATP) that is part of an Ash Pond Closure Project. The plant is part of an overall closure plan that involves dredging, processing and depositing of fly and bottom ashes. You will work closely with the Operations and Maintenance teams at the ATP to meet the targets of the Closure Project. You will also work closely with the Deposition Engineers and Marine Supervisors to plan and coordinate system operation. Responsibilities include providing engineering guidance to operations including troubleshooting of plant equipment and processes, support maintenance activities, providing engineering design and installation support for plant upgrades. Additional responsibilities are around reporting of plant and system outputs and working with other members of the engineering support team. The person filling the role will ensure that these responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Your Impact

  • Direct and monitor operations related to process and mechanical equipment including:
    • Cyclones
    • Dewatering screens
    • Thickeners
    • High pressure pipeline systems
    • Agitated tanks
    • Flocculant systems
  • Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, sketches, calculations, technical drawings, spreadsheets, and illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.
  • Update the drawings and the 3D model with as-built information during operations.
  • Provide guidance and training to entry-level engineers and operators.
  • Direct the QA/QC at the plant site in conjunction with the lab techs.
  • Assist in the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of data obtained during field investigations
  • Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers and planners on project

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 5 to 7 years of relevant post education experience in engineering and prior mechanical design experience.
  • Engineer or Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Proficient knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to project work-related issues.
  • Experience with building and infrastructure planning, design, and construction 
  • Working knowledge of relevant mechanical system and construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications.
  • Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, discipline-specific design software (i.e., AutoCAD, CAM), math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation.
  • Ability to work in 12-hour shifts (day or night) – two weeks on/two weeks off.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Professional Licensure/Certification.
  • Experience in dewatering/thickening plants or water treatment plants.
  • Experience managing small to mid-size projects.
  • Piping standards (B31.3 and B31.4)
  • Autocad Plant 3D experience.
  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired. #LI-SV1
