WSP Global is Hiring a Staff Geologist Near Wilmington, NC

This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Staff Geologist for the Wilmington, NC location. This candidate will have the opportunity to be involved in projects across our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization with exciting and impactful projects helping our clients meet their site investigation and remediation goals.

Your Impact

  • Support data collection efforts for extracting, identifying, and compiling environmental data from soil sampling, soil gas sampling, groundwater sampling, stormwater sampling, boring logs, and other matrices for projects, investigations, and surveys. 
  • Conduct environmental site assessments (Phase I and II).
  • Lead field site investigation, subsurface boring and trenching oversight, and monitoring of groundwater and extraction well installations.
  • Participate with preparation of more complex data and visualizations such as mineral charts, soil analyses, groundwater modeling maps, geologic cross-sections, and other illustrations.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations that explain research, findings, and recommendations to prevent, control, remedy, or clean-up chemical and environmental problems and contamination for internal review.
  • Develop technical reports describing field activities and presenting environmental data for projects regulated under CERCLA, RCRA, Solid Waste, State Superfund, and UST programs.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and interpret geologic, hydrogeologic, and chemical data obtained during field investigations, offering input with developing action plans for site characterization and remediation approaches.
  • Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Oversee and monitor cross-functional teams in executing project work.
  • Collaborates with professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide future ready solutions for clients.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, or closely related discipline. Master’s degree a plus.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience working as a Geologist. 
  • Proficient with geological research, investigation, technology, measurement tools, software, and techniques.
  • Proficiency with the concepts of reducing and eliminating the use or generation of hazardous substances, processes, or products., and mitigation programs.
  • Well-defined specific knowledge of relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Experience sampling soil and groundwater via drilling including direct-push, hollow-stem auger, and other similar drilling methods.
  • Project management experience with small to mid-level projects including tracking hours and expenses for project work.
  • Experience in conducting Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments in accordance with ASTM guidelines and industry standards. 
  • Experience with UST investigations and remediation including investigation of hydro-carbon impacted sites.
  • Experience with evaluation of vapor intrusion and sampling soil gas per EPA and NCDEQ guidelines. 
  • Experience installing groundwater monitoring wells, remediation wells, and soil gas wells. 
  • Experience writing groundwater monitoring reports and well installation reports.
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.
  • Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, and identify the most cost-effective responses that will minimize waste, prevent pollution, and conserve resources.
  • Proactive, can-do attitude to support dynamic projects and diverse client base
  • Effective at coordinating and assertively directing others in the field such as subcontracted drillers, excavation contractors, utility locators, and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to pass a drug screening and background check
  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening
  • Must be flexible to a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to prioritize responsibilities and quickly adapt to change in a pressure work environment.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional certification track.
  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.
