WPS is Hiring an Editor Near Torrance, CA

The Editor, reporting to the Editorial Manager, plays a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy and quality of our wide range of psychological and educational assessment projects. In this position, you will be responsible for editing complex materials in both print and digital formats. Additionally, you will provide valuable editorial guidance and collaborate with the team to improve our standards and processes. Meticulous attention to detail, excellent time management skills, and the ability to work effectively in a publishing production environment are essential for this role.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough copyediting and proofreading of large, complex assessment projects for print and online publication.
  • Collaborate closely with project directors, R&D staff, PD&T staff, Design Director, and graphic designers to ensure consistency, accuracy, and quality, while meeting publishing deadlines.
  • Provide valuable editorial, design, and formatting guidance to enhance new and revised assessments, CE courses, webinars, and other professional development and training materials.
  • Efficiently manage workflow and delegate proofreading tasks when necessary, ensuring timely completion of deliverables.
  • Set realistic timelines for independent project tasks and diligently adhere to them, providing accurate and timely updates to the Editorial Manager.
  • Promptly communicate any potential delays, seeking assistance with prioritization and delegation if required.
  • Provide editorial guidance and feedback, working closely with the Editorial Manager, editorial staff, and design team to maintain the integrity of WPS standards across all products and collateral, while continuously refining our editorial practices.

Position Requirements (Skills, Knowledge, Abilities):

  • Bachelor's degree in English, social sciences, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in copy editing, line editing, production editing, technical editing, and proofreading.
  • Additional experience in graphic design or related roles in publishing, advertising, marketing communications, or journalism is preferred but not required.
  • Proven expertise in writing, editing, design, production, proofreading, and quality control for both print and digital materials.
  • Strong proficiency in handling long documents with headings, tables, figures, citations, and references.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced production environment with strict deadlines.
  • Consistent track record of successfully managing complex publishing projects with multiple deliverables.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills, including prompt issue identification, effective information analysis, and proposing alternative solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and concisely across different channels.
  • Extensive experience with Chicago style and/or APA style.
  • Proficient in proofreading techniques, including the use of proofreader's marks.
  • Competence in editing both hard copy and electronic documents.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word track changes and Adobe Acrobat PDF markup.
  • Comfortable working with the Macintosh operating system.
  • Strong command of Microsoft Office suite and Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud.
  • Familiarity with table formatting basics.
  • Understanding of technical art norms, design principles, typography, page layout, and text formatting.
  • Knowledge of commercial printing and prepress norms and practices.
  • Ability to create simple technical illustrations and edit screenshots.
  • Background or interest in psychology or psychological/educational testing.
  • Preferably, possess a basic understanding of statistical terminology to accurately interpret data, maintain consistency, and ensure clarity in statistical information within the content you edit. Alternatively, a willingness to learn is also acceptable.

Hours:
This is a non-exempt position from Monday through Friday. Work hours begin and end between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm (Pacific) with a one-hour break for lunch and two rest breaks. Eight hours per day is required and other occasional overtime may be necessary per business needs. This is a remote position that requires availability for the Pacific Time Zone Availability for work schedules.
